Bruce became a bat because bats are the only mammal that flies? Well, that's a novel take., but I'm not sure I buy Bruce, especially before any of the robins, designing his crime fighting persona as an aspirational figure.

That particular explanation for the bat-theme is a pretty goofy stretch, but the general idea of Batman as an aspirational figure is consistent with Snyder's take going as far back as the New 52 and his idea of doing a Batman reacting to the New York in the post-9/11 era, rather than the New York of the 1970's and 80's, as Miller highly influential version was.

Yeah, neither do I. Bruce doesn’t fight so that other people can become Batman in turn. He fights so that they won’t have to.

Also, JLAwise, I vastly prefer the Batman who never consciously accepts that he can do the impossible. Supes, WW, GL, Flash, MM, Arthur...*they* do the impossible. He’s just a damaged rich kid who tries hard. What, you want to fight crime but you can’t dodge gunfire or read lips from a distance of a thousand yards? Try harder.

That’s what makes him such a great Bat-Dad. Superman is conscious that he’s stronger and smarter than ordinary mortals, thanks to an accident of birth, and he humbly watches over them, that they may one day equal or surpass him. Batman honestly believes that he *is* an ordinary mortal, and he has absolute faith that anyone can reach his level of excellence given the right training and motivation.

Okay, so I haven’t actually read any of the Metal books, but what bothers me about the scans I see from these series is the way they seem to completely divorce superheroes from the concept of saving people. It seems like every character here is either a superhero or an evil Batman and it makes the world feel sterile to me

And here I was having bought the fakeout that the Batman Who Laughs was not going to be the villain of this piece, alas.

Having the brain of Batman-but-also-he's-the-Joker get put into a lifeless copy of Doctor Manhattan is such a beautiful encapsulation of everything about comics that makes me want to stop reading them and dedicate myself to a hobby that doesn't actively sap my will to live.

Art's great though, and Capullo's new design for BWL as "The Darkest Knight" is cool.

I'll be so disappointed if the Robin King isn't just a horrible rat king monster, but made of Robins.

I haven't read any of the Dark Metal AU stuff (BMWL appearing in main books aside). From the outside, it seems like Snyder is having an ASBAR moment; can anyone who's actually read this confirm if it's as batshit (pun not intended) as it appears?

It's batshit, but nowhere near ASBAR, only a bit more Batshit than Dark Knights Metal or Secret Wars.

I get it! The Batman Who Laughs thought this was an easy way to get power, but instead the combination of omniscience and predestination that turned Jon Osterman into an aloof god will shift Nega-Bruce's perspective, pushing him away from his sadism into something new. Perhaps existing simultaneously with the young boy in the alley and the noble crimefighter he once was will even cause him to remember who he used, leading him to rebel against Barbatos and ultimately save the multiverse.

Or maybe he's going to stay the same static God Mode Villain he's always been, only with powers.

I hope it's the first one, though.
