My Hope is we get a final ALL STORIES MATTER & Are CANON! Especially Pre-CRISIS. Explanation : FANTASY!!! & Timey-Wimey Wobbly!
Then effective immediately thereafter AT&T only allows books of the trinity & Relatives, And a rotating crop 10-20 random titles of which only 3-5 will be good-decent and not cancelled within 3-6 months. I KiD (I Hope)
anyone else remember when comics used to count on telling good stories to sell their books, as opposed to a world changing event unlike any other, every year or so?
The whole “woo! Heavy metal! Throw up the horns! Grip it and rip it!” energy doesn’t seem to be working as well this time around. Metal largely worked because it was unexpected and strange, but Death Metal is just more of the same, built atop a villain who people are already getting sick of, with awful concepts like Doctor Manhattan Wally West, and a bunch of self-serious multiversal continuity management.
I think they worked a lot better last time because they did have that creepiness plus the novelty of "Batman-as-Cyborg/Flash/Green Lantern/etc". This time around they're just goons for the Batman Who Laughs, even moreso than they were the first time around. I really don't get why Death Metal stuck so much with the Evil Batmen stuff instead of broadening the scope to a more general world gone wrong theme. Throw in a version of the Flash who went mad due to his super speed perception, or an Aquaman embittered by the destruction of his kingdom from pollution, actually do something with the conceit of the Dark Multiverse as nightmares brought to life. That Batman who's a monster truck might be silly fun, be he doesn't actually mean anything beyond a gag.
The whole thing seems really caught between being a brainless romp where the Justice League had to fight weird Batmen and a more serious/tedious statement on DC continuity.
Oh for crying out.. ...when did the Fifth Dimension get nerfed? In Grant Morrisson's JLA, it was shown as a realm "Above" the DCU proper, and heroes from Earth visiting it were effectively "Flat" beings with little way to influence things there.
'Restart the multiverse.' I can't even care anymore. The stakes are so over the top, yet so bland, because this just keeps going. DC continuity is just a train wreck now.
