Yeah, Gordon just casually turning a blind eye to police murdering someone in custody (even if they are a cop killer) seems to be totally out of character and, all things considered ritght now, the sort of thing one might have thought editorial would pull a book over.
Parents were thieves, kid was their lookout. Parents killed by police (In the original by Jim Gordon, post Crisis it was some other cop). Kid grows up swearing vengeance on all cops as the Wrath.
Ends up being killed as the Wrath by Jim Gordon
In the later story a new Wrath appears, determiend to take down cops, Batman and Nightwing.
We find out that he was a kid secretly adopted by the Wrath in a twisted version of Robin's origin. Kid was devoted to Wrath, and when the Wrath is killed (before anyone else even know about the kid) swears revenge when he's an adult.
Gets even MORE messed up at the end, when Nightwing discovers evidence that this kid was not the first Scorn, he was just the first Scorn to survive the Wraths insane training regimen.
LBR, in this day and age every new comic is an Elseworld until the Continuity Gods (Jim Lee and... Jesus Christ, is anyone else in his pay-grade not fired) put out a new timeline saying This Is What Matters.
I assume this'll turn out to be some alternate evilverse, but still, why would Batman need to torture some dude? He's the world's greatest detective, a master of hypnosis and body reading, an expert in drugs and truth serums, a billionaire with an encyclopedic knowledge of everyone's weaknesses. He has dozens of more narratively interesting ways to get information out of this guy. Why use him in a story at all if he's just going to do real-world crooked cop stuff?
