#1'd ended on the Midwest American town of Franklin being attacked.
Clementine Libbey and her father were running.
Clem was into the trees when a voice rang out: " William Libbey!
" Go on and face me! "
She watched her father turn and fire.

She ran further, into the night.
In the morning, she made her way back to town, where she buried her dead father - and brother.
She headed down into the center of town, where the survivors were packing up.
" Clem, I'm sorry about your pa and brother. I barely got away myself last night.
" But we got nice plans. Good incomes, comfortable lodgings, healthcare - the works. Why don't you come with us?
" It's not too late. The agent's still down at the sheriff's. You can tell 'em you want in. I'll come with you.
" You know I won't, Noah. "
" But why? "

She left on her quest.

(The terraforming machines devouring a different town here aren't modernity as malicious threat, but modernity as cavalier threat - per writer Zack Kaplan, the series is a story of " small town ideals in the face of technology dependence and sociological pressure ".)

Clem, out in the woods, evaded the drones.
Slipping out of the lake she'd been hiding in, she startled a horse.
" Whoa, boy! Easy there.
" I'm not gonna hurt ya. "

She and the horse heard something crack.
" Hey, if someone is there- "

The air sizzled.
