That da Vinci, so ahead of his time. Knowing about viruses 400 years before Pasteur theorized their existence and 130 years before there were microscopes. And he even foresaw the word for them that wasn't applied to causes of sickness until the 1720s!

I mean, if you really want to go back I think zombies as we think of them nowadays dates back as far as Babylonian times. They were something Ishtar tended to threaten the Earth with to her peers when making demands.

I had the same reaction to the word, but thinking about it, it's being translated from the Italian anyway, so if you wave your hands fast enough, it's translating whatever term Da Vinci was using into what we'd call it today.

It's like if you're translating a German manuscript from 1492, you can translate literally to "thunderstone" if you're wanting to give a feel for what the writer thought about it, or you can translate it "meteorite" if you're trying to get a point across about what it is.
