How much more meta can we get until it becomes a piece of paper that just says by reading it you male it real. Or the Chronicler tells us only reading ads can save Blue Beatles life?
I'm honestly surprised no one's looked out at the audience and told us to wish the multiverse back into existence. That must be the grand finale. Close-up on Superman, a single tear rolling down his cheek, staring out at us. "Our only hope," he says, "is for you to believe. Turn the page if you want us to survive..."
And somewhere, Grant Morrison mutters about doing it better in Animal Man.
Honestly, the entire Death Metal storyline feels like an epic metal guitar solo where the lead guitarist dropped some good drugs beforehand, and just launched into this thing halfway through a song, and forgot how to stop, and just keeps going and going with different riffs, and every so often the rest of the band confusedly joins in--especially the drummer, who's dealing with his own shit, man--and the crowd's just headbanging along while secretly checking their watches or slipping out to use the porta-johns and not coming back and the stage crew is lighting up because it's gonna be a long fucking night man, and their manager is wondering why he didn't go into another line of work and suddenly the speakers blow and there's fireworks and a fucking bald eagle flies in and F-16s rocket overhead and where did the fucking horse come from and
Chronicler: "Characters are disappearing and reappearing constantly and getting revised more and more frequently by arbitrary reality-shifts, there's way too much about this one guy who dresses like a rodent whereas whole alien races barely get mentioned, promising threads are derailed as if the scriptwriters keep changing, and almost nothing comes to a satisfying conclusion that isn't immediately reversed. F plus. I'm going to go chug a few galaxies to scrub this mess from my brain, you can go back to the void where I found you."
[I do love superhero comics, obviously, but I don't really love it much when they tell me how much I should love them.]
1. What's the point of a Chronicler when we already have Monitors? Observing and critiquing the narratives in the DCU for a nebulous higher power is their whole shtick.
2. Why is Metron, of all characters, talking about how gods are powered by belief? The New Gods have never worked like that. They don't have organized mortal worshippers (except for Darkseid, and that's just because he's a narcissist). Most people in the DCU don't even know they exist.
3. If you wanted to tell a "you just have to believe!"-type story, why would you make the protagonist a caped, Dormammu-headed, cosmically-empowered inhuman being from Beyond? What the fuck does he have trouble believing in?
"Well, speaking as a direct emissary of the Creator and Ruler of the entire Omnimultimacroverse, this one Birds of Prey storyline just seems really implausible to me. Stuff like that never happens to...uh...people of my species, back in wherever the hell I come from. What do you think, Mr. Space God that I just brought back from the dead?"
Not just your imagination. What's the equivalent to Adaptation Decay when it's not happening in different media but a cycle of increasingly frequent reboots in the one medium?
