Giga's set in a world built around mecha.
Nov. 28th, 2020 04:36 pmThe mechs are the homes and gods of the world's people.
Issue #1 opened on novices of the gods' worshippers, the Order of the Red Relay, and their instructor.
He asked one of them, the distracted Evan, for " [his] theory as to why the Gigā let us make our homes inside them? "
Pressed for an opinion, the boy answered " I think we're part of their micro-biome. "
" I'm glad mine isn't the only blank face here, Evan. Elaborate, please, if you would. "

The instructor pivoted from the recognition of a familiar story to speculation on its recurrence.

The world was ringing.

Thirteen years later, Evan wasn't in the Order.
He was a scavenger, out scavenging with his friend Mayra.
They came upon a sight.
" I don't.. I don't even know what I'm looking at.
" Was it.. did Dusters do this? "

They made their way into the dead Gigā.

They headed back, processing the dead god and its worshippers.
Parting ways with Mayra, Evan entered his room in a Gigā's leg - and found his friend Mason, who'd brought some rations for him.
Mason, who was now doing criminal investigation work for the Order, had come to ask Evan to be his informant.
Evan agreed.
Mason went on to ask him if he'd been thinking about " coming back into the fold. "
" Not this again, Mason. You know why I can't come back. "
" Yeah, I do. Pride.
" Pride and misplaced loyalty. "

" Okay, he's gone. " Evan said, sometime after Mason'd left.
" It's safe? " asked the robot in the ceiling.
" Yes, Laurel. It's safe to come down. "
Laurel came down and told Evan about their day.
" Can I get another look inside your parietal chamber real quick?"
They gave Evan permission to look.

" Evan? Did-d youu c-cut yourzzzelf? "
" Laurel, I need to go run an errand out in the forest..
" And I'm going to need your help. "
The next day, Laurel and Evan were scaling the dead Gigā.

Evan pulled himself onto the ridge, then reached out to Laurel.

That settled something in Laurel.
