So... having not been following this beyond what's posted here...
What, exactly has been the point of this series? Is it just Warren Ellis asked to write about Batman and then just rambling about whatever came into his head for twelve issues?
I'm not sure that he's trying to say it, in the way you seem to be getting at? Like, it's a conflict. Batman tries things, Anti-Batman tries things. You could do it one panel, and then you wouldn't have a book to put out. I don't think there's a grand statement about the nature of Batman here (although some of Ellis's predilections are certainly on display). He's telling a story.
Well, it's a new take on a mostly-forgotten character--Scorn-- which is something I'm usually interested in. Unlike so many other "I'm you, but evil" villains (Venom, Sinestro, Zoom, etc), an "evil Batman" has never really caught on. His "greatest enemy: is not someone exactly like him, but the exact opposite of him--Joker, obviously. (I'm not counting Batman Who Laughs, and you can't make me. I hate him, if only because of how hard DC seems to be pushing him, and he's just Joker in a Batman suit with weird giant spikes in impractical places for no reason so you know he's grimdark and edgy, and isn't he so cool! Please love him as much as our market research said you're supposed to!)
Ahem. I seemed to have strayed a bit there. But back to my point: Did anyone else see the cover and think "Why is Snake-eyes from GI Joe throwing Batman off of a building?"
