you know with all the consequences free magic in the DC Universe, I'd love a story where he finds out the reason all this stuff heaps on him is because he's so damn sure that there must be some sort of cost

That's an interesting idea. Though IIRC the vertigo magics tend to be more cost heavy - so it might be a genre thing. But I could buy the idea he's been "doing it wrong" this whole time.
