Between 2019 and 2021, Aaron Campbell and I chronicled John Constantine’s sly progress through London. For 13 issues, the book dripped with heart and hate and rage—rage at the state of the world, rage at the state of our minds and lives. Those 13 issues were our poisonous love letter to the Constantines of the past — Moore’s, Delano’s, Ennis’s. It was the best work we’ve ever done. And then it stopped. On a note of death and despair, with — like all magic — a heavy price levied. And now it’s back. Because the cost doesn’t count if we don’t get to see it being paid. Outside himself, he's being pursued by the Orgham family and Gotham police - inside his head, he's being pursued by one of the Orghams' Azmers.

The end of #1074 had him alighting into Crime Alley - #1075 had him there physically and mentally.

Physically, he was alone - mentally, he was with " [his] darkness " Barbatos (who'd popped in briefly at the start of this run, #1062) and a younger him.

( The mental scene was young Bruce Wayne kneeling amongst his dead parents. )

It's so funny because if you started from a position of a critically acclaimed run on Hellblazer and then somebody suggested to you that you take all the vibes, things that worked, and ingredients and staple them all onto the Suicide Squad you'd think, "What the fuck are you talking about?! "We throw in a lot of surprises. What starts as a find-the-monster type story turns very quickly into a holy-shit-we-know-where-the-monster-is-but-we-can't-go-near-him kind of story. There's this intriguing little mystery running throughout where the main character seems to be narrating events from the end of the story and yet keeps making these funny, little references to seeing things happening outside of the main narrative. We're going to gradually get to that.

This a pseudo-spoiler but there are those that assumed we introduced the rookies so that we had some body bag collateral to raise the stakes because, in a thousand years, we would never be permitted to kill off members of the real Suicide Squad -- I'm sorry to tell you that you're wrong about that." -- Simon Spurrier

I think those of us working behind the scenes tend to think of the Sandman Universe as a safe space to tell mature-theme stories of every conceivable type, without worrying too much about the vicissitudes of in-world continuity. Paradoxically, when you compare it to (say) the DCU, the Sandman Universe is both far more recognizably akin to our own world, and far more limitless in its scope and possibilities. Weird, that. Stories, basically. That’s what it all comes down to. It’s a universe where the stories are more important than the joints between them. -- Si Spurrier
