Honestly, though, this is the most sense that the DC multiverse has made in 37 years, maybe ever. No arbitrary 52 worlds, no half a multiverse centered entirely around Batman, no infinity that somehow gets subtracted down to five. There shouldn't really be any kind of "center" to such a cosmos, but I'm glad that DC is at least no longer making their protagonists' planet the most important world that ever was or will be.
Way to catch up to Galileo there! GOOD JOB, EVERYONE.
Final Crisis ended with the world becoming fully aware of multiverses, with radio shows speculating what it meant for society, and that revelation was quickly forgotten all about.
I take your meaning but can we please use a word other than "Elites"?
Just because the word has really horrible connotations thanks to the past few years of Republican trash and assorted other morons using it as a dog whistle for antisemitic conspiracy theories
Really? Because I've seen plenty of left-wing types referring to Trump's circle as "elites". I don't think that word has been entirely claimed by the right-wing.
It honestly reads to me the exact opposite. Like, "Okay, we're giving a reason why continuity doesn't work and things constantly contradict each other, now we don't have to try to make everything fit! (But still, buy all these books, they're required reading)".
Comics written for people who think the most interesting thing you can do with continuity is to rearrange it.
(Which, ultimately speaking, is better than comics written for people who think continuity is the stick you use to drive off stories you have problems with.)
The nicest thing I can say here is: it wasn't another fuckin reboot
And hopefully we can now just go back to pretending this event never happened, much like how writers of the current books have been ignoring that it's happening and how DC thankfully decided to just pretend that Doomsday Clock bollocks never happened either
And please god, let it be at least a decade before we have to endure yet another "Event" like this
And three times as long before we ever see the Batman Who Edgelords, the "Dark Multiverse" or any of this other nonsense ever again
When I first started reading comics the continuity was the main selling point. I loved the potential for crossovers and everything intersecting in fun ways and I never understood the people who saw continuity as an anchor that drug everything down.
I get it now. I understand their position.
EDIT: Also, "Two centers" displays a remarkable misunderstanding of the word "center."
That made me go look up the definition of an ellipse. I remembered something about ellipse have two points where a circle has one, its center. The ellipse ones are called 'focal points,' which in a comic, sounds pretty cool. 'Focal points' sounds better than nonsense like 'two centers.'
Let's not try and apply logic to the incoherent gibberish Scott Snyder wrote in a 15+ issue emotional breakdown over how he's still mad about the New 52 and rather than just moving on and pretending it didn't happen like normal people did would rather obsess over it like it was a comic book version of Fortunato, and he's coming up with a way to wall the event up in his wine cellar
Why would Scott Snyder of all people be mad with The New 52? His Batman run there brought him a lot of attention and that let him do things he probably couldn’t have had there not been a big continuity reboot.
This Same Event: Gives more spoken lines to Silver Banshee than it does to any character who is gay or lesbian, focuses entirely on straight cis white people created thirty to eighty years ago
Also why exactly is Lex Luthor not in prison facing the death penalty or at the very least life imprisonment for what he did? Like they all do remember the part where he's a mass murderer who tried to destroy all of reality so that he could re-shape the multiverse into a dystopian hell ruled by an evil god from beyond the dawn of time, right?
I think it's pointing out the fact that, despite the gushing in these scans of how the new Omniverse is an amazing wide-open future where anything can happen, it's still rooted in the sensibilities of writers pretty well stuck in the past. LGBT characters are becoming more and more mainstream -- heck, even Disney has a kids' cartoon with a bi lead -- and female protagonists and protagonists of color are even more common, but a lot of the continuity-focused writing of the major comics companies puts a huge amount of emphasis on characters created decades ago, when things were less progressive -- and those characters are more often male, more often white, and overwhelmingly straight cis people.
In a real sense, holding respect for continuity as one of your cardinal virtues always means you'll be stuck to a certain degree in the past. The main continuity Superman is never going to be bi. The main continuity Batman is never going to be black. You can have spin-offs or experimental storylines changing that, but eventually, you're always going to go back to more or less the core concept that emerged in the 40s and was refined over the next few decades. And that looks more and more dated as we get ever closer to those concepts being a century old.
There’s a sort of poetic justice/irony to Wonder Woman, arguably one of the greatest victims of endless continuity meddling, needless retcons and unnecessary reboots, now reheralding this bold, new yet familiar era of “fudgeit, anything goes”.
What's with this "we've never seen another multiverse as wonderful and self-sacrificing as you guys" thing? This event is way too meta to be pretending that the current DCU has a monopoly on fictional heroics.
Hell, even the Dark-u-verse is full of characters performing foolish, admirable acts; they just always fail to achieve their goal, for extra tragedy points. But they still tried.
