There's some heavy Hickman vibe to this as well as Gillen's touch.
Interesting to see that it's basically building on everything that came before, including the Gaiman run and their mass suicide in Avengers.

Also, the "Reboot" to line them up with their appearances in the upcoming movie--although Sprite's look here is genuinely terrifying.

I'm curious to see where this leads. The Eternals have always come across as "New Gods lite" given their place in Kirby's career, and they've never really made a huge splash, either in the Marvel universe or the public consciousness (Thanos aside...) Even the ones that have become Avengers (Starfox, Gilgamesh, Sersi) are C-list at best where the team is concerned...

So this run is building the Eternals as more a evolutionary immune system/genre-savvy mythotype?

I don't know who Sprite is, but Gillen is writing Kid Loki again and that fills me with glee.

I liked this. It doesn't ignore anything, and is quite interesting.

Now last I checked, the Eternals had committed mass suicide in the Avengers book from a few years back. How exactly did that fix that, if you'll forgive my ignorance.

They rebooted. Sprite from her latest safe backup, before she got dangerous.

The Eternals have always been recreated/rebuilt/rebooted by that machine of theirs if they get destroyed. As they say in the book, murder is a temporary problem.

... wait a tick, some of thought sounds... familiar for some reason.

... Of course! Scott Snyder's Batman cloning machine!

Sprite has some obvious Kid Loki vibes. Which seem to be baked into her story in some bizarrely coincidental ways from the Gaiman series.

And Ikaris so far seems to be "Thor with less of sense of humour and bravado". Which is interesting in itself. Kieron Gillen said the Eternals are more like angels than gods. So Ikaris is more of a servant than a king, which affects how he acts. Thor is Rider from Fate/Zero and Ikaris is Saber so to speak.

Hope we get to see more of how the Deviants work. Deviants vs Eternals is an interesting dichotomy. In most stories agents against change like the Eternals would be the bad guys.

Esad Ribic art is good as hell but he's giving everyone a receding/mature hairline. Which works well enough for most characters except for Sprite.

So far the most interesting part of the comic is it's themes being an Eternal and trapped forever unable to change. It's a theme Kieron Gillen has worked with before in Kid Loki, interested in where he takes it this time around.

I'm wondering where the Uranian Eternals fit into this. My impression is that they were NOT serially resurrected/programmed by some mysterious machine to serve the Celestials in the same way. Does the intro text just refer to the Eternals who remained on earth and became cosmic-powered through Kronos' experiment (shown in flashback in this issue)? Could the Machine have resurrected/programmed the Eternals who left earth before that event, but their being off-planet removes them from its influence?

Now I wish the machine had rebooted them all gender reversed, and they just shrugged and got on with it.
It'd feel a bit like Ann Lerckes Ancillary series.
