We're now a year between Legion reboots.
Next, it'll be nine months, then six, then three.

Eventually, the Legion will just be in a state of perpetual reboot from issue to issue.

It's not often I look at a comic book and ask "What the fuck did I just read?"

I finished this and went "What the fuck did I just read, and why did anyone approve it?" Just... the story, the art, the everything. Even if this is a hypothetical future of the current Legion like all the rest of Future State, it's still just...

This makes me actually nostalgic for the 5 Years Later run, and that was a hot flaming mess of dystopian grimdark that required an entire reboot to ultimately get over.

Bendis' run needs to be shunted off to the future of an alternate Earth like those before it. Maybe they can turn up in a Crisis of Infinite Legions in 10 years.

Is it SO HARD to have a good, non-grim, take on the Legion? I mean I'd LOVE to have one that embraced diversity and representation and posited an optimistic future, while still telling sweeping science fiction stories of gaudily-clad super-powered teenagers who are just as much a family as a team.

As far as I can tell, all of the Future State comics are grimdark nonsense. I don't see the point.

Yes, this, 100% this. THIS is the Legion I grew up with and this is what I want my Legion stories to be.

Bendis is one of those writers who generally just does whatever seems like a good idea to him at the time (remember that hot minute he was interested in Echo in New Avengers, then did nothing with her and immediately wrote her out? Fun times).

It's not necessarily a negative, and he's not as bad about it as some, but... it can be pretty damn random.
Especially when writing a title that doesn't play to his strengths.

The Echo thing was actually changing plans - it was originally supposed to be Daredevil, but then the Ronin story plans leaked, so he changed it so it would still be a surprise.

I was meaning more the post-Civil War bit, where there's a huge deal about rescuing Maya from the Hand, she joins the Avengers and then... doesn't really do anything, before just up and vanishing after Secret Invasion.
