Nightwing #78 - Prepare to shed a tear
Mar. 18th, 2021 10:05 amI don't know if people were holding off on posting from this issue to allow me to. If so, thank you! :)
Because we've got two pages of the preview posted already, I can only pick two pages to post which would normally be a challenge, and it still is, but there are two pages which immediately leapt out at me as being essential.
Dick is in Bludhaven, his new/old home where, as we saw previously, he's just adopted a puppy he's rescued from bullies. (The puppy hasn't been named yet, but it's going to be tough to beat the fan name given to her of Bite-Wing)
Babs is waiting for him at his apartment, as she has something to deliver to him. She is the executor of Alfred's will, and she reveals that Alfred has left his entire, more than substantial, fortune to Dick.
And, perhaps more importantly, she has a letter for Dick from him.

Okay, now there is SO much to love there. First of all, the art is stunning, and Adriano Lucas deserves so much praise for the stellar colouring work going on here. It's lush and beautiful and the sunset colours set the mood amazingly well.
The posing of Babs and Dick on the fire escape, so casual, and yet so in character. (Though costume on, mask off? Tsk! Tsk! Tsk!)
"Master Grayson" - When Alfred wrote this, in all likelihood Dick was still "Ric", so calling him by his first name would have been off, so he covers his bases politely.
Paraphrasing slightly, Tom Taylor has promised to remind us in this run that Dick is not just a pretty face and a kick ass fighter, he's smart, he's BATMAN smart, and a detective. Alfred calling him a problem solver is a nice summary of that.
We also have a flashback to Dick's early days (of course) and showing us some early Dick and Alfred interactions (Dick helping with the dishes because he doesn't feel right having someone doing that for him, when he's more than happy to help, which seems in character)
The issue also sets up more of the ongoing plot we'll see. An old face from Nightwing's pre-New52 time in Bludhaven returns to be a threat, and a new character shows up, who has a vested interest in Dick Grayson through her father (Which is slightly odd, as a similar character showed up in New 52 Nightwing, I wonder if that might tie together or whether it's a completely fresh scenario)
This even sort of makes up for the horrorshow which was the Wayne family wake for Alfred, where Ric was in attendance and, well, let's not go there again... EVER!
It also addresses the ongoing shift in Wayne Family finances over in Gotham in an unexpected and logical (if terribly convenient) way. Basically Bruce can go broke if he wants to, but that's not going to impact on Dick's title, thank you very much!
So, in short, looks great, reads great, and is a very nice palate cleanser after the whole Ric affair (If you felt one was needed of course, I know it had it's fans.)

The colorful art fits Dick. :)

Date: 2021-03-19 02:24 am (UTC)I may check out that comic. I've not read the DC comics in...well over 10 years at least. But that art is just...beautiful.
As is the story and characterization.
Thank you for sharing that - I'm impressed. (I fell in love with comics for the art and dialogue, and am very picky about the art.)

Date: 2021-03-19 05:27 pm (UTC)I don't think they should undo his death with a stupid reboot or anything like that but I think they should find some way to bring him back from the dead. Give us Ghost Alfred

Date: 2021-03-19 08:19 pm (UTC)Though much as I do love Alfred I'm not sure I'm mentally prepared for the sight of him naked in a shower
