Batman: Black & White #2 this year has a Batman/Joker story.

It's one that uses the anthology's titular color scheme to its advantage, taking place on a pouring Gotham night darkened by a city-spanning EMP.

The Joker (not the one who set the EMP off - that was " some boring paramilitary nutjob ") stood over Batman, pinned by his turned-over Batmobile.

They were in a channel filling with water, on the other side of a buckling floodgate.

" Joker! Shut up and listen.

" That spillway is on the verge of collapse. If we work together, we can both get out of here alive. "





The gate broke and the water came, washing the Batman, his car, and the Joker away.



He triggered his gun, letting the winch's retraction pull him and the Joker up.

The Joker's critique of "pop-Freudianism" is definitely a wink to the audience, though I do think it's also within the considerable range of his character. Yes, he makes goo-goo eyes at Batman all the time, but not literally all the time. Batman, on the other hand, should know that the surest way to get the Joker not to help him is to expect him to. Rule of funny.
