It's all been quite successful so I have to imagine my Wonder Woman is eventually going to take place in the same world as Superman. There's always going to be someone smart like Geoff Johns who can make those connections, so I think it will eventually be absorbed. -- Grant Morrison
I'm sorry but I can't take any writer seriously who thinks that Geoff Johns is smart or that he should be allowed anywhere near the character of Wonder Woman or anything to do with her
Geoff Johns writing is the worst thing to ever happen to Wonder Woman and yes, I include the times in universe when she was dead in that list
One good thing I will say here is that I love the fact that Diana and Artemis are fucking here and that it's clear Diana is going to be Domme-ing her hard. If only the Wonder Woman comics in the main DCU would hurry up and do the same and give Diana a girlfriend or girlfriends instead of forcing her to date nothing but boring men
Then her love life might actually be interesting
Diana getting herself some "Loving Submission" with her fellow amazons or a woman or women from outside Themyscira would be something I'd pay good money to read.
Eh, Geoff Johns has written some clunkers but he’s got just as much good stuff under his belt. His Justice League run (and especially how he wrote Wonder Woman there) were off to a rocky start, but Forever Evil and beyond were pretty solid in my opinion.
The narrative here seems pretty straightforward to me?
Anyway, this stuff has very heavy Marston energy, I'm into it. The bit where Wonder Woman resculpts her own mom as a baby is way more Kanigher, though.
At the very least, as a community activity, it's good to know what a poster thinks of something that they are offering. Like when that poster last year was posting loads of rape content, it's good to know where they're coming from with it.
Do you want me to go and respond to 99% of all posts in the same way? That would be tedious for everybody involved.
So why this post in particular?
This post here is of a book I have read, so I feel better placed to comment on it.
It is presented with no commentary, nothing to link different scenes, and nothing to explain the bits that are missing (like Doctor Psycho's punishment). Pages seem to have been selected arbitrarily and this is just a collection of incomplete scenes. There is nothing to give anything more than a muddled feel of the book to people seeing the scans for the first time.
It is fully a third of the book, posted less than a month after its release. This means that the limit for the book has been reached and it is effectively locked off from further discussion on the community. This I feel runs counter to the ethos that the community claims to have.
Don't confuse 'not what I'd have chosen' with 'arbitrarily.' In the replies to you, we see someone saying that the narrative presented here was clear and another that it's made them want to go out and buy the book. That's why I chose the pages I chose.
If someone wants plot summary, there are plenty of other places online to find it. But stories are about the actual execution. I'm not interested in reading what people think about plot summary of something they haven't actually read themselves. I am interested in their reaction to the actual execution, to whatever extent it can be presented within the confines of the 1/3 rule.
One thing I've come to notice about Morrison's writing is he likes to cram in as many "wild" and "out there" concepts into bites of dialogue as possible and this just that cranked up to 21.
Sometimes it works and other times it's like your trapped in an elevator while a man on a drug binge describes what he sees when he closes his eyes while also reading you excerpts from the novel he's been writing while on a drug binge
Seems like it's a bit late for painting the Earth One stories as some shared universe, especially after Green Lantern.
That horse has not only bolted, it got to the big city, went to law school and is now a leading judge. (Which is funny, given Morrison themselves said they were a shared universe back in Multiversity, but... oh, well.)
It's so strange that this was basically Morrison's final high profile project for DC (leaving aside the Superman and the Authority project recently announced, since they seem to be taking the Miyazaki approach to retirement). Three full volumes of a high profile Wonder Woman project from someone who's writing of female characters has drawn fire for basically their entire career.
It's cool to see Wonder Woman's revolutionary mission finally be realized on the page, though I'd really love to see some proper long form criticism on this series now that it's finished, ideally from someone who's not a cis-man. Fundamentally, any sort of Thousand Year... Regime is gonna make me uncomfortable, and while I get that the Amazonians being perfect outsiders there to enlighten the rest of us is very much the point, going right back to Marston, that fact that the Amazons are already perfect in every way makes them deeply boring to me. Even the most utopic visions of Krypton have them doomed by hubris and complacency.
One minor criticism that I have is that it's a little unfortunate that for all that Pacquette makes an effort to render a variety of body types for women, it's a little unfortunate that the only people he draws as being anything but gorgeous are the goofy MRA failsons. It's an easy joke, but it carries some weird implications that are decidedly out of place in a series that has talked a big game about body positive.
The fact that Etta is the only sympathetic character who doesn't look like a Nietzchean Ubermensch from Ayn Rand's wet dreams is a little bit worrying yeah
Well I mean I assumed that your reasoning was "It's fucked up that the Amazons are allowing a literal Nazi to just chill with them here" which was what I thought as well
See, my gripe was how they essentially brainwashed her into their way of life. I thought that was meant to be some kind of comparison thing with Doctor Psycho, but that was never really followed up on, and judging by their talk of “reformation spells” here I’m guessing that still happens to dissenters.
The final issue of The Green Lantern and WW Vol. 3 came out at the same time, though I think WW Earth One was a little more high profile in terms of being oriented towards the mainsteam/book store market. There's definitely something productive which could be written about these two series in conversation with each other.
In any event, Morrison's supposed to be attached to a leaked two-shot Superman and The Authority story later this year, so that's their "final" series for now, at least until they come back again.
I don't understand if it is supposed to be serious or not... It is... colorful... cute... fun in a way. No sensical in a nice way, but still no sensical. It looks like an answer to all those no sensical comics full of violence and obscenities, here a no sensical comic full of flowers and hugs. Lol?
Anyone else kind of unsettled by this utopia? The love bombing freaks me out, I’m not okay with one culture prevailing over all else, and I don’t know if I’m too comfortable with Wonder Woman allying herself with people who keep other people as pets.
