I know Beast has been an asshole for a long time now and treated so many of not just his own people but also his own friends awfully

But

The look in Beast's head makes me think his change in behaviour is because he's extremely depressed and full of anxiety and deeply unwell and no one has noticed because he makes jokes and tries to sound smart and confident and it makes me wonder if he's just been slowly self destructing for the past two decades worth of stories and no one noticed because he tried to act like everything was fine

That could work as a direction for fixing Beast's character. He's been the X-Men's resident Smart Guy since the beginning, and being a superhero smart guy means being an expert in everything. In that plot where Dark Beast replaces him (and no one notices), Evil Hank ends up overwhelmed by how many different subjects they expect him to be an expert in.

Hank took on the burden of curing the Legacy Virus, an artificial plague created with 40th century technology, and *succeeded*. Later, one of the first port-Decimation stories was about Hank trying to fix M-Day, which he couldn't do because it was a magic reality warp and beyond any science. He pulled off a miracle but couldn't manage it twice. His showy amorality and superiority complex could be based in some imposter syndrome.

Does Beast have any friends left at this point? Jean should be one of his oldest friends, but all we've seen in this series is her treating him with contempt.

I think Beast's behaviour has destroyed most of his friendships at this point. Which if he is unwell is going to make things worse for him because he now has nothing but employees who do what he asks and the Council who expect him to deal with any problem they tell him to

Isn't Hank supposed to be roughly average Asgardian-strong and -tough in his furry blue form? I didn't realize Sage had any physical super powers.

I don't know- I think Sage's powerset is usually something like "Computer brain, whatever the plot requires that to mean," right? I can buy some sort of medically dubious pressure point elbow strike being part of that, especially with a more or less actively cooperative Beast.

While Hank is tougher than a human when he's all blue and furry, pretty sure he's never been Asgardian level strong.

Sage, I think, has probably just been holding back the urge to hit him real hard for a good long while now, and is taking advantage of that opportunity.
