Pride Month: Lego Batman and Joker

The Lego Batman Movie is in my opinion one of the better Batman films and one of the best takes on his relationship with the Joker. There's a lot that I could say about it but 'The Root' nails it here:

"After seeing gritty Batman, detective Batman, real-world Batman and dozens of other Batman variations, from comics to cartoons to films, where do you go? Lego Batman has the answer. The sequel to the 2014 surprise hit The Lego Movie gives us the greatest Batman love story ever told. It just so happens to be a gay love affair. And it just so happens to be with the Joker.

This is not a gay subtext mined for laughs; this is essentially Brokeback Batman. Amid the jokes, action, obsession with tight abs, rainbow color scheme and dance routines, this movie isn’t a nod to gay love between Batman and the Joker—this movie is head-banging to it."

I do not normally ship Batman/Joker but in this movie I do

Of course, the kissing becomes awkward with Lego Joker's shark teeth.

Well its not like either of them have lips to lose so its just clinking their little plastic heads together.

HAHAHA - I saw this movie with my nephew in theaters and I have no regrets. I was delightfully surprised how straight (har har) they played the "Joker wants his relationship validated and Batman needs to accept people into his life,"

Also the DVD special features are amazing - there's literally one where Harley runs a talk show withthe Joker lamenting how Batman doens't respect him and everyone is tryign to get him to find a new hero to bother and move on with cause clearly Joker deserves better.

I still rather regret that the third act is overstuffed with villains from other franchises, but I remember the first two acts being more than enough to make up for it.

That was the one thing I wasn’t crazy about either. I would have preferred they just stick with DC villains.

This was great, but I think we all know who Batman’s heart really belongs to.

I’m surprised you didn’t bring up Dick being elated over having (what he thought was) two dads.

I get Joker needing Batman.

I have never understood why Batman is suppose to need or even be complemented by Joker.

Probably because not a whole lot of people have suggested Batman needs Joker in-universe.

I agree. In a meta-sense, as a hero-villain combo, I get it, since they foil each other very well as characters -- dark, brooding, ordered, serious versus colourful, manic, chaotic, clowning. That I get.

Any in-universe homoerotic subtext, however, seems utterly off-base to me. Or if it does exist, it's strictly one-way only. To each their own, of course, but this is one shipping pairing I've never understood.
