They've "killed" the Joker in so many ways, I think they even nuked him once, but the writers keep bringing him back. They always bring him back.
DC should do a minimum five year pause on all Joker stories. Build up some suspense. Whet the reader's appetite for the character. "Where's the Joker? What's he planning? Is he really dead this time?"
I doubt they'd ever do it but it'd be nice to see.
They had the perfect moment for this after Endgame, and his little lake side chat with Bruce during Superheavy. Endgame was literally written to be their final battle, all cards on the table. It was never going to, but it should've stayed that way for way longer than it did
It would be interesting to go back and figure out the longest gap they've ever had between Joker stories. I'm guessing it would be less than a year, in any era.
Honestly Joker finally coloring outside the lines enough to start disrupting the people who feed on the system is interesting as hell.
Truth be told I have ALWAYS hated the "Joker and Batman Together Forever" thing. I think them and their relationship is much more interesting when they are shown to be perfectly capable of existing entirely separate from each other.
Eh, it looks more like a big reveal about how Gotham is designed to suck and that everything is pointless because the Court of Owls likes it that way.
Honestly, I'd rather a 4th wall break. It would be hilarious if his big "The Joke is on all of us!" is to point outside the frame and go, "We can't change Jim! We can't die Bats! We're tonights entertainment!" What can I say, I'm a bit tired of grimdark villains that always survive.
Honestly, the older I get the more I feel that's the only way The Killing Joke comes close to making a satisfactory point. At the very end, Batman isn't laughing at the two-guys-in-an-asylum joke, or even the sheer stress of the situation, but because, for that one shining instant, he too can see through the Fourth Wall.
(For extra fun, one can imagine the Joker doing all the shit he did in a deliberate effort to get the Batman title cancelled by the Moral Guardians. Alas, the combination of Direct Market and The Dark Knight Returns coming out two years prior had already decapitated the Moral Guardians he was counting on...)
Did the Joker watch the 2012 Anna Karenina movie before this? There was a bit where someone says Anna didn't break the law by falling in love with Vronsky, she broke the rules.
Joker's speeches here sound so much better if you imagine them being spoken by Hugo Strange instead. Joker really is absorbing his whole schtick into himself.
