The main series did mention something about a Doom 2099 doing some time-travel. Maybe he had mutants helping him?
Or it's an entirely separate convoluted X-Men time-travel plot.

This is definitely one of the tie-ins that serves no discernible purpose. We already got all of the information we needed to hate Hyperion and Power Princess before this issue, so there's no revelation there. There's no real revelation for the characters either. We don't even see the characters forced into the Doom Patrol model, or an interesting story.

Quite frankly I feel like I've been consistently the most positive person in this community about this event so I don't know why my taking issue with this one issue is worthy of comment

The complete rejection of that kind of garbage way of thinking in the current X-men books is what brought me back to the franchise

I get why they did this, but I think it would have been cool to make the X-Men a Doom Patrol analogue, and lean more into those similarities.

We are not yet in a world where it turns out Charles caused the car accident that killed Jean Grey's best friend, or the Shi'ar to dive-bomb the Summers plane, or the plane crash that killed the Munroes...

But at this point, would it be so much of a surprise?

Especially given this is Charles "You never had a third brother Scott, I'll hear no more of this nonsense about a third brother" Xavier we're talking about here a man whose list of crimes includes keeping a sentient being in his basement as a dangerous gymnasium and weaponising his friends memories of the holocaust to win a fight with him

Given the DC angle on this series, I would've liked that as a direction for the FF in Mephisto's world. Doom Patrol is obviously very similar visually. They always remind me of the FF, if the public reacted differently to them.

I do really like tie-ins of this nature, the weird alt-universe stuff which may or may not carry to conceit of reading like it's part of an alternate publishing history, but these kinds of cliffhanger endings are always really annoying, knowing that they'll never actually be resolved.

On the one hand, I get that. On the other, I love the cliffhangers because "to be continued" really brings home the sense of this genuinely being a comic published in some alt-verse.

I remember Kurt Busiek saying one of his favorite anecdotes, told to him by a retailer, was some person coming into a store looking for back issues of Iron Lantern, not understanding how the whole Amalgam deal worked.
