At this point I kind of wish McFarlane would just throw him six issues of Spawn to do so that Cates could just get it out of his system.
It's still funny that for all of his bad boy styling, Cates doesn't seem to dream of being the new Todd McFarlane as he does working for the real Todd McFarlane.
I’m simultaneously looking forward to and dreading Cates’ run on Hulk. Looking forward because his horror stuff presses all my buttons and I like how metal he can get, but dread because he can’t seem to help himself with killing off characters.
Leaving aside my urge to dunk on Cates, I'm not keen on his taking over Hulk. He'd have been a natural fit for the character... four years ago, before Ewing redefined what the Hulk could do as a series and a character. Keep in mind that Cates opened his Thor series by having Thor get his eye and his arm back in the first issue, thus erasing the visual legacy of Aaron's run, and he's now got Odin making his way back into the story.
Following the Ewing series would be an unenviable task for anyone, but with Cates in particular I worry that he's been brought on to reset the character to factory standards.

New writers almost always try to reset the status quo when they come on board. I’m willing to bet Ewing will undo Old Man Eddie here if not the entire symbiote god concept within his first arc or two.
Very true, but immediately having Thor get a new eye and arm struck me as particularly egregious. Usually they at least pretend that the previous run mattered, otherwise the patented Marvel illusion of change becomes too obvious.
Hmm, I'm a little nervous about that. I think last time two writers who had a key party, and one of them being the Hulk, was John Byrne and Bill Mantlo, (It's probably happened since, though those two were doing definitive runs). Granted, Incredible Hulk quickly recovered, and how, but Bill Mantlo's Alpha Flight run I think irreparably hurt the property.
So am I missing something, or does this look so unsustainable it makes modern environmental policy look sane and reasonable? Because if he looks like that after what I'm assuming is no more than a month, that body's got another week left in it, tops.
Flash and Carnage escaped to the land of the living. Eddie manages to defeat Knull once and for all and ascends as the next King in Black, god of all symbiotes, free from Knull’s malicious influence.
