I’ll admit, I’m totally biased with this as (a)I haven’t really been keen on Krakoa since day 1, (b)I’m Irish, and (c)I love seeing mythology of any culture pop up in modern stories, but I’m not sure how I feel about Krakoans killing such an important figure in Celtic mythology given Ireland’s long and contemptuous history with foreign occupation from people who claimed to be superior to us.
Mythical beings from every culture routinely get beaten up or killed by Marvel characters all the time. Wasn't there that time that Thunderbolt Ross took out the Mayan pantheon?
In this instance, the Morrigan being Irish is not being used in any regard other than that happens to be where Siryn is from, so that's where the possessing being also originates.
In any other circumstance I’d agree with you, but that hits a bit differently here given Krakoa’s imperialistic conduct and the almost “white saviour”-esque depictions of non-Krakoan culture thus far.
The Avengers origin is literally a team of American (And one Asgardian) heroes taking down another cultures god who is portrayed as a mua-ha-ha-ing two dimensional schemer.
Gods in comic books being written as supervillains and superheroes is just a thing that happens
I think you're on the money here. Without the context of Krakoa this maybe wouldn't be anything more than a slightly disappointing use of Celtic mythology. But with the context of Krakoa, and it's simmering subtext of a deeply American vision of utopia and "imperialism, but good this time", it's suddenly a little more unfortunate to see a major figure from the traditions of a formerly colonized people get killed off.
I think that, like so much of what troubles me about Krakoa, it's not deliberate, but it's just one thing that's coming out of the blindspots of the creators.
This was a pretty good series. Not my favorite, but I did like the use of some of the characters, like Eye Boy, Prodigy, Northstar, and Akihiro, and hope those continue. It just seems to me like most of the writers are struggling to deliver on the unlimited potential of Krakoa. Like, the idea of digging deeper into resurrection was a good one but then it never really delivered on the premise.
this is going to be a problem for this run of the X-books. THey're having trouble making many of the sidebooks last, but they need a massive amount of world building
I loved the way they wrapped things up here with both the Morrigan and Mojoworld plotlines and I am so glad that Siryn is free from the Morrigan's control here
I'm really going to miss this book
Leah Williams is one of my favourite writers at Marvel and her work on this series has been great stuff. At least we still have Trial of Magneto to look forward to and I do hope that she'll get to do more work in the X-books after that as well
