"That's actually a huge part of the issues coming up, the idea that these wizards 500 years ago made rules and one of those rules was that you couldn't use your magic to get rich. Then people started living in cities and then there was these amazing big TVs you couldn't afford or cars you wanted to drive, but your vow meant you have to live humbly in your cleaning or cooking job even though you could rule the world.

That's a huge part of where we're going, but it's a nice allegory too in COVID times. The lawyers didn't help keep society going. The Hollywood people and the influencers didn't make sure we still had food on the shelves. It was the delivery drivers and the shop assistants and all the jobs people ignore while we're lauding Kim Kardashian's backside. This story obviously predates all that, but the celebration of normal people is a nice coincidence, a pal of mine working on the Netflix show pointed out."

- Mark Millar

Well, that was... something. I'm not even trying to be snarky here, I get that Millar his own style, but even for that this was pretty lazy and uninspired.

Although I am curious to follow this series from the side because a part of me is genuinely curious how Millar will react to the pretty big failure of Jupiter's Children, which he had obviously seen as his epic creation.

Can't wait for the wizard people to start making references to big celebrities and franchises that will be incredibly dated by the time the whole series is out

The first bubble of the last panel of the first scan (!) expanding to fill the corner rather than leaving the more traditional gap where the oval would end does seem a tad unusual.

Someone needs to update the old Frank Miller cartoon for Millar.

"Okay, Millar, we'll let you live if you can write a comic where the bad guy actually has some nuance and doesn't just do horrible acts out of nothing but the evulz."

If that's not a big deal to do, you'd think there'd be a hundred little ways they could make their lives more pleasant not involving money, with a little creativity. Stroll up and live in someone's posh house. Have servants to look after the place, have them buy things in their own names if you want them. "Work" several office jobs and magic people into thinking you're actually there and working since earning a wage is apparently okay.

I can't stop laughing at Mark Millar's ludicrous idea that there's anything remotely noble or laudable about poverty

Hate to break it to Mark Millar but as one of the people who do those "Normal jobs" he thinks makes us so Magical, I'd give anything to be a billionaire or a millionaire

And I have never once met anyone living in poverty who genuinely says shit like "Oh thank god I'm a greeter at Wal-Mart and barely paying rent on my shoebox sized appartment instead of being a billionaire celebrity living in a mansion"

These "ordinary people" aren't doing these jobs because we're heroes. We're doing these jobs because we can't find anything that pays better. It's honestly patronising as shit for a man whose sold the rights to multiple properties to Netflix to be all "Oh aren't the poor just marvelous the way they mop the floors for us and make sure we have things to spend our money on"

So I'm going to go ahead and say every last one of these wand waving imbeciles were fucking morons to make laws against using magic to get rich

And if I had magic I wouldn't give a shit what Dumbledore or any of his moron friends had to say about what I could or couldn't do with my power, I'd use them to get rich any way that I could. Because I can tell you now, I wouldnt give a shit about "Wizard Laws" any more than I give a shit about any other kind

The only kind of person who would decide "Okay I have magical power...I must NEVER use this to make myself rich and powerful" is someone who was dropped on their head as a baby

Using magic to make money, using magic to commit random mass murders for fun - those are basically the same thing, right?

You forget that in Mark Millar's world everyone is a barely restrained psychopath

Even children. The kid's gleeful approval of quadruple murder lets us know how evil the bad guys really are.

*Sarcastic voice* boy howdy I sure can't wait for them to start screaming slurs at each other and talking about how much they enjoy rape -_-

Linkara and Dominic Noble have both described Mark Millar as a comic book "Shock Jock"

Regardless of how much he himself might personally believe or disagree with the things he puts in his stories his whole "Bit" is having characters just actively try and be as offensive and shocking and "Edgy" just for the sake of being vile because much like the writers of South Park he believes that is the same as being funny or provocative

This seems like it'll be more of the same...

These are the bad guys, right? Please let these be the bad guys and they're going to get what's coming to them.
