Sonic the Hedgehog: Bad Guys #1

So Sonic the Hedgehog 2 AND Dreamworks’ The Bad Guys both came out at the same time, and now this is being posted here around that timeframe as well. What are the chances?

Following the events of the Metal Virus saga, Eggman fanboy Dr. Starline has fallen out of his hero’s good graces, lost his signature tool Warp Topaz and must now rely on himself once more. Following a disastrous one-man raid on a valuable Eggman base, Starline retreats to his secret lair to figure out the next step forward.





With his plan settled, Starline takes a jaunt over to Everhold Prison, a massive complex containing some of the world’s most dangerous criminals, to get some much needed help...















And so the gang is set! Unbeknownst to them, the warden had woken up and was listening in on them, but despite his best efforts to contain them they break out, overpower the guards and instigate a massive riot. Now that they’re all warmed up, it’s time for them to do some real damage...

If any character personified the phrase "too clever by half", it was Starline.

He really does seem to take the phrase "fuck around and find out" as a personal challenge
challenge.

He just really wants to find out. He's a scientist, they always want to find stuff out.

"Okay, I know working with this guy blew up in my face like immediately last time, but this time it will work."

Like, Starline, buddy, I think you may need to choose another vocation, because I don't think being a super villain is for you.

Making a partnership with a dangerous force that's going to eventually betray him

He's learned well from Eggman I see

Even Eggman learned after the first time...in regards to partners. To be fair, Shadow was really good at teaching him not to do partnerships anymore. His more common problem is thinking he can control something and failing utterly. Chaos, Iblis, Dark Gaia...after that he took more precautions.

That is basically what Starline is doing here tho

He thinks he can totally manipulate this beefy boy but unfortunately for him the Personifcation of Deviantart here has his own plans and is just as dangerous even without his Vivziepop minions to call upon

Eggman reached for higher things though. He went with ancient malevolent entities. I mean, Dark Gaia was sealed inside the planet and Eggman needed to break the world just to get it out. Yet he thought he could impose his will on it? It barely noticed he existed.

He knows he can't trust any of them; the key is to betray them first, but only once he has what he needs.

It's a risky gambit, but as the opening pages established, what other options does he have?

Everybody thinks poorly of Zavok just because he looks like a dimwitted bruiser at first glance (until you look at his companions, I guess). Starline is right to say Zavok knows how to take advantage of a situation, but he's only saying it to flatter him.

That could prove a costly mistake.

I always like when a character who is a big juggernaut of a villain is also very smart

It's why I like Bane and why I also think Doomsday kind of sucks as a villain

If the big guy is just a big dumb muscle dude who smashes things its like "Oh

Well

The hero is gonna outsmart them because duh anyone could outsmart them"

If the villain is both terrifyingly strong and also smart and cunning then that means no matter how strong or smart the hero is they are going to have a legitimate threat to them here

It was always a shame with Bane. No one outside the comics ever seemed to get the character right. He's always too dimwitted or willing to be a mere thug for hire. And always with the venom. He stopped using that stuff for a reason.

I think part of the issue might be that Bane came in through Knightfall, a story arc which saw him break Bruce emotionally, mentally, and at the end, physically, with the oft homaged/parodied breaking of Batmans back, which led to Bruce going into recovery and Jean Paul-Valley taking up the mantle.

That's kind of a high note to start with, so it's what a lot of media tends to look at as a starting point, and don't really try to move beyond the "breaking the bat" characterization that's resulted from it.
