remember when reading this series wasn't like getting a kick in the nuts (and not in the good or fun way, for those of you into that sort of thing)?

Reading back, it was always like getting kicked in the nuts, it's just been a while since it happened again (and also it's gotten really old)

I think it might have always been like getting kicked in the nurts we just assumed it would GET SOMEWHERE with it. There's nothing wrong with bad things happening in a story but - when its just a long slide down it gets sort of old.

Right. There's an argument in fiction that you need the dark moments to happen to make the light moments shine, but if all you have to look forward to is a brief glimmer in the gloom the appeal quickly dwindles.
