what's with the closed captioning instead of word balloons? I'm finding it off-putting.

It is without sound. Speech bubbles represent sound in-media, so closed captioning conveys their meaning while still leaving everything silent.

It's artsy-fartsy. :P

I'm clearly missing something that's going on here, then. They're speaking... how is that silent? Are we watching silent security footage? that seems a poor narrative choice if the dialogue is important. Are we supposed to be seeing this through the eyes of a deaf person who's reading lips?
