Sonic the Hedgehog #34 — "Chao Races and Badnik Bases, part 2"

Shadow is investigating Eggman’s possible whereabouts in White Park and gets in a brief scuffle with the mysterious hooded stranger, but is caught off guard when they somehow manage to effortlessly overpower and outrun him.





Shadow breaks into Clutch’s collection and, true to the lead’s word, finds a veritable goldmine of Eggman tech. But his attention is caught by one thing in particular, a sight that disgusts him to his core...

Later, in spite of some rough bullying from Clutch’s Chao, Cheese is able to cross the finish line in his next Chao Race. Rouge comes clean about the deal she made with Clutch, but stresses she’s got a sneaky plan up her sleeve. She didn’t want to relay any of this to the gang because she figured they were too goody goody to do anything shady, but to her surprise, they want in.







So that’s it for the Chao Race this issue. Back at the Badnik Base, Tails is hard at work on cracking the Eggnet without alerting anyone, leaving Sonic bored out of his mind.

I'm guessing the reference to This Machine is due to Belle.

I thought it was appropriate between the Team Dark stuff and Belle making her debut.

Speaking of Team Dark, what are your thoughts on how they are written in this series?

As a Shadow fan, the mandates about him absolutely suck. The 3 of them are written passably in this ark, but they still feel off. Omega's still a treat to watch though.

I just don't understand these mandates. These were issued from Sega, weren't they? They're actually clashing against Shadow's canonical personality.

Love Rouge and Omega, Shadow initially has a strong showing in #6 but I’m irked by the executive mandates that make him the way he is now.

Is it just me, or is Sonic referencing Shadow the Hedgehog in that last panel?

I'm partially mistaken; I thought he was in front of flames here, but:

I guess this proves who really is the better inventor, doesn't it? She's made of wood. And her mouth moves. Not just up and down, she has lips that should be painted on, yet they move. That's beyond brilliant. Also utterly impossible, but this is a comic about a blue hedgehog in sneakers capable of breaking the sound barrier, so we can let it slide.

My theory is she isn't really made of wood but some fantastical metal that just resembles wood.

She's made of wood from the little known Titanium Tree.

I think Tails would know the difference. Besides, she says "sawdust" like it's a expletive and is utterly terrified of Sonic's buzz saw quills. If she isn't wood, she at least believes she is.

It is possible that it's only the outside of her that's made of wood.

Oh, clearly she isn't made entirely out of wood, but the fact he was able to put all the delicate parts inside a wooden shell is astonishing. I wonder what her power source is.
