In light of Sabretooth, maybe the real reason Doug kept Nature Girl out of the Pit wasn't because he supported her insanity. The prisoners could control pieces of Krakoa. Nature Girl's powers might let her hijack the entire island.

It was Krakoa's decision, so they'd have to throw themselves into the Pit for not respecting the land if they went after Doug and Krakoa.

It's not like the pollution and growing Eco-catastrophe that is coming down the line is the product of decades of larger sociopolitical and economic forces that were working to ignore or obfuscate the real problem of unchecked and aggressive industrial expansion and waste products, and continued attempts by certain interests to limit or destroy regulations/regulatory agencies which work to try and reverse the catastrophic climate disaster coming down the road.

Instead, it's the folks doing the basic work of drilling or mining who must be at fault for everything, ignoring potentially the economic situations which may see many of them take such jobs because they are the only jobs available or which offer limited socio-economic mobility to those living in regions with limited chances to advance or leave economically declining areas. They are to blame because we can't punch corporate and political avarice in the face.

It's the "On Deadly Ground" of comics.

It seems pretty clear to me that we're not supposed to be rooting for Nature Girl and her team here. Especially since, as the story takes pains to emphasize, they're going after the working stiffs, not the people at the top making money off all this despoilment.
