Generation Hope #9 - "Better"

When the stories [about gay teen suicide] started to break, the first place I heard about it was actually from Fraction. We'd just passed the baton, and he said "If I was still writing the X-Men…". I read the news and could only agree. It's not the type of story that fits in any other major superhero book. It's simply not what those books are about. But the X-Men? X-Men is a book about mutants, used as a metaphor about prejudice. And of the X-Men books, Generation Hope is fundamentally about new mutants trying to survive dealing with the fact they're mutants. With the metaphor in place, you can not just do a story about it – I dare say you should tell a story about it. In a real way, it's the sort of story Generation Hope exists to tell. If we can't tell this story and tell it as well as we can, the book may as well not exist. -- Kieron Gillen

This is the kind of stuff I want to see in an X-Men movie, not generic aliens that look human or half-assed takes on their rogues gallery.

I think the implication might be that it's just his skin that's melty goopy.

You know, I considered that, but it really doesn't make sense. I mean his nose came off. No blood, no exposed tissue, nothing. His sense of balance would also be ruined as his ear canal filled with melty goopy skin. Oh, and he's breathing without any trouble.

His mutation has only just manifested, so he wasn't fully mutated just yet.

Is there something I'm missing? Why are they blaming this kid for what Zeeshan did? I mean, yes, he was less than comforting, but that's just being a dumbass. It's no reason to stick a drill in his head or erase his existence.

Are there pages where he shows no concern for what happened that aren't here?

I don’t have the issue on hand at the moment, but if a remember correctly the one guy just kept trying to film him instead of trying to actually be helpful when his supposed friends face was melting off. Kind of like someone who would film a car accident instead of calling for help because all they are worried about are the views they’re gonna get. But honestly, they tried to make it seem like that guy being a dick was the main reason he killed himself when I’m pretty sure it was more the fact that his entire body was melting and he probably didn’t want to end up being just a blob or whatever he was turning into.

They go further than filming, and actually upload it WHILE HE'S MELTING. Kitty Pryde displays a 'Sheffield Liquid Face Boy' video on her pad as she descends the ramp of the blackbird on site.

Then this is a serious overreaction on Wolverine's part. Zero, I expect this from. His sanity is more than a little questionable.

It does have a point, though. There are many who fetishise groups, but then turn their nose up at the reality, and don't care for members of those minorities that don't look sufficiently fuckable for them, only caring so far as their own sexual gratification goes.

Honestly....I would've killed that guy, too.

What are you talking about? What did he do? He took pictures and tried to video the progression. That's more the actions of a idiot who doesn't understand the room. He sees his friend going all melty and thinks it's awesome and wants to record it. Am I missing some context here?
