A sentinel that is unable to even realise that it's being fired upon? Well, situational awareness was never a priority, I guess. Not like having the mouth being able to perfectly express the agony they are feeling.

I believe that's the canon explanation, actually. Sam's not a mutant; the Sentinel was malfunctioning.

I'm not sure where his bird telepathy is supposed to come from currently. It used to be something the Red Skull did with a cosmic cube, but presumably that explanation got retconned when the stupid Snap Wilson idea was taken out back and shot. Still, better he has an unexplained superpower than one given to him by a Nazi.

Even without malfunctioning they've had some interesting logical fallacies. Like when they figured that since mutants come from humans the logical step to safeguard humans from mutants was to destroy all humans.

Amd then, of course, there was the time when they reasoned that since the sun causes mutation they should kill the sun.

I loved that one. Cyclops says that, logically, their goal should be to prevent mutations. The Sentinel can't deny that and they all go into the sun for...reasons. I'm not sure what they thought that would accomplish, but there you go.

I suppose once their programming agreed to the idea that mutations would keep happening as long as there was a sun, they were forced to try and do something about it despite having no chance of actually succeeding.

Hm. I suppose so. They were only MKIIs, after all. Very dangerous models since they're designed to counter any attacks done to them, but clearly not big thinkers.

There’s an ish in the original Secret Empire arc where Professor X says that Sam is likely a latent mutant whose powers were brought out by the Cube.

This was eventually retconned out by Busiek after Sam was successfully able to enter Onslaught and the heroes returned.

Which would explain why it can't tell the difference between a Mutant and a non-Mutant.
Lang really cheaped out on those things.
