For a guy who was all "Hulk Smash!", old school Hulk could really over think life sometimes...

The Hulk/Bruce Banner,Group: The U-foes,Title:The incredible Hulk,publisher:Marvel comics

Hmm, let's see... Totally random circumstances,no control factors or measurable degrees of faction ???? Yeah it's totally doable. Risk your life why not ?

Typical among the intelligentsia, why the scientific method fails switch to personal attacks to find subjects for experimentation.

Why can't people just leave things alone ? Someone always has to go and touch stuff.

Little did they know that they also gained the power to instantly comprehend their transformations.

I think so, but the FF's powers are a bit simpler than, "Oh! I'm sinking, surely this means I can increase my mass at will!" or "I can't breath, my powers must be deflecting the air away from me!"

And at least in one case, get a costume designed by a hippie.

Interesting sidenote, only one of them actually wears any clothes; Vapor. Those aren't costumes that X-Ray, Vector and Ironclad are wearing, that's what their skin has become. And Vapor only has clothes because the outfit she was wearing when she transformed transformed with her.

Have the U-Foes ever fought the Fantastic Four?

I think so, when most of the FF were incorporated into the Avengers, and some big battle was fought. But four on four, no.

Minds out of the gutter, kids.

Sound is kinetic energy, emitting kinetic energy is Vectors power, I've seen weaker excuses used.

I actually have this one issue of something (Fantastic Four's, but I'm really not sure which LINE) where a Galactus skull from another universe falls into 'normal' FF-verse, and when the FF investigate, the Banner from THAT universe comes along (as Hulk but in control) and calls them U-Foes. Afterwards he brings the "World Law Enforcement Squad" with him to deal with the 'U-Foes'.

So in one universe apparently, the U-Foes survived and got exactly what they wanted, and Banner formed his own 'Avengers/Defenders' pastiche to deal with them amongst other things.

When I read that story I didn't know the U-Foes referred to some old characters. Nice touch.

"Typical among the intelligentsia, why the scientific method fails switch to personal attacks to find subjects for experimentation."

The amount of scientific experiments in the Marvel Universe that have failed or never got off the ground in the first place simply because their test subjects were more secure in their masculinity or were okay with being thought chicken if it also meant that they were alive and unmutated is nothing short of remarkable.

I wonder sometimes if all this irresponsible science has produced any activist groups of any note in the MU.(I mean one that's more than "BOO SUPERHEROES! REGISTRATION!") I mean, if scientists experimenting on animals causes that kind of fuss. Sometimes BUMS have been experimented on. Or prisoners, like Luke Cage.

At a guess, X-Ray and Vapor just "pulled themselves back together", and Ironclad and Vector realised they didn't actually NEED to breathe, so once the hysterical shock had passed, they were able to concentrate on refining their powers to the point of switching them off in Ironclad's case and getting used to being a on-human lifeform for Vector.

You know, the Hulk at the end here makes me realize that, at least in the old days, he was one of those characters that, partly because of his limitation in intelligence or just character in general--two others like this would be Cerebus and Morpheus(the latter because, well, turned out even Neil Gaiman could only get so much depth out of him, and then SANDMAN became a short story anthology)--he often became a passive part of his own stories, to some degree just the occasion for the surrounding plot, but really more a bystander or even close to a host almost. Like the way he doesn't understand what's going on here while everyone monologues all around him.

I would LOVE to see how it would look if you wrote in that style now. This sounds like Mantlo. Is it? I'm willing to bet money it is, and I'm not looking it up.

I think Gaiman planned that for Sandman from the beginning, as Pratchett has said about Rincewind, the main character of several of his Discworld books. "There's only so much mileage you can get out of someone who's an unrepentant coward, so it's his job to meet people more interesting than he is."

Where did Iron Clad's mini skirt come from?

Oh this is interesting to read. I've always had a fascination with the U-Foes. Thanks for posting!
I did not know that Vector was integrating with the ship computer during the transformation. I guess that his skin/coating could be interpreted as some kind of star map* instead of just funky lines and squiggles, like I always thought. It's still funky though.

* Just today I read War of Kings: Darkhawk and the hideous art did clearly show some of Vectors symbols as arrows and planets with rings around them. Which I think seems like going a bit far from the original look but hey, that was the least of the art problems.

However you choose to do it, I'm sure it's a bitch to draw for longer sequences. :P
