Well it's been awhile but here's issue 2 of Legend of The Shield:
Notice large scans ahead.

Previously stuff happened.

Anyway Sergent Joe Higgins has a nightmare of the original Shield warning him not to take off his helmet. That just might be important later.

Unfortunately his yelling wakes some people up.

Ya know when you're relying on someone to watch your back in combat you might want to treat them better. Granted no one likes getting woken up early (especially when they have an operation in the morning) but a little respect can go a long way toward not getting shot in the face.

After that Joes' buddy Lt. Devon Hall can't get back to sleep so he decides to wander around a bit.

Why would a file like that be left laying around?
Why would such a file exist? Why wasn't it destroyed?
Why the hell is Lt. Hall going to wait until they get back from the mission to tell Joe?
Why is twitter so popular?

Okay so that last one isn't story related, I got caught up in the moment.

Moving right along...

He seems like a nice trustworthy guy.

After the briefing General Higgins reveals that he knows that Hall knows about him setting up his son.

Well that can't be good for Hall. If only he had some time between finding out and the briefing to tell Joe.
(Also Poor MANN-X.)

The mission starts and all goes well for The Shield. I wonder how Hall is making out.

I don't see why they can't all go together retreating in waves but what the hey.

He's right it is a stupid way to die, but there are worse ways to go. He could get a refrigerator dropped on him.

Meanwhile at the rendezvous point:

Remember that thing that I said might be important later?
Remember that they are still in a combat zone?

WHAT IN THE NAME OF MICKEY WHIPWRECK DOES HE THINK HE'S DOING?
WHY IS HE REMOVING HIS HELMET?

This guy is supposed to be a highly trained solder. Instead he's acting like Private Snafu!

*sigh* Anyway he wants to wait for Devon but McGill won't allow it. McGill makes a great (and not evil) point that they can't risk 20 lives for one. But then Devon appears as they take off.

So much for him.

The Joe tries to force the helicopter to go back but...

Should have kept your helmet on dumbass.

Next issue The Shield will be played by Lorenzo Lamas.
But before we get to that here are the letters for this issue:

Also who else wants to buy some shrunken heads?

Well what do you folks think so far? has it gotten better? Worse? Did I squander my money?
I'll try to post issue three soon.

Well there was a version of The Shield way back in the 40s (before Captain America)

He is, in fact, why Cap's shield is round.

After Captain America came out with his original shield-shaped shield, the people at MLJ (now called Archie) called them up and pointed out that the shield looked awful similar to the costume of the Shield...and then, there's the whole shield/Shield aspect. So, the people at Timely (were they Timely at the time? Can't remember....) changed it to avoid issues.

Also, if you read Archie comics (or at least the digests) in the 80s, they frequently had little 2-page things where all of Archie's superhero characters were arrayed...even though they weren't being used at the time. I suppose it must have been a trademark thing.

Is it wrong that my mind fell into the gutter at "don't take it off"?

Nah, I wouldn't say you squandered your money. From what little I've seen of the !mpact line, I'd say it was fairly good stuff, and this is no exception. That panel where Devon is running from the enemy and the gunfire is blotting out his words is VERY cinematic - I could see that scene in a movie.

Well, they were being written by DC's normal stable of creators at the time, as I recall, so there's no particular reason why they should be any worse than the normal DC titles. (Plus, they were NEW - for the purposes of the story - characters, so they weren't burdened down by decades of continuity - people could try out some fresh new stories that they could never tell with, say, Batman.)

Man, as a kid I couldn't figure out why this art bugged me so bad. Now I'm pretty sure it's the inking. Or rather, the combination of those inks on those particular pencils, producing an unholy alchemy that has all the characters being portrayed by plastic action figures. It's like Twisted Toyfare Theater all over again.

I really think we should do a week on comic book advertisements. I've seen some seriously cracky things.
