cyberghostface: (Spidey & MJ)
[personal profile] cyberghostface posting in [community profile] scans_daily

So this is the last 'interlude' post before I get to the requested Venom sequel. You'll understand why I had to post these parts once its all done.

Unlike the other posts, this just represents one part of the overall "Clone Saga" storyline. It's a good arc and worth checking out on its own, but I'll do my best to fill you in.

Basically Spidey discovers he has clones up the wazoo. The "Scorpion" in the Ultimate Universe is in fact a clone of Peter with a scorpion tale grafted on to him, and Spider-Woman is a gender-switched clone of Peter as well. They don't factor in with this part of the story although they're still important.

Anyways, Peter discovers at one point that Gwen has returned...

End of the issue, then in #99...

Anyways, a lot of stuff happens, the least of which is the return of Richard Parker(!) who states that he wasn't on the plane which it crashed, and the arrival of none other than Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. Again, there's a lot of good stuff here, so pick up the trade if you want to see more.

In #100...

In #101...

So anyways Nick Fury wants to take Peter in because of the whole clone fiasco, when who else comes to the rescue but...

Peter goes after Carnage and Nick Fury, when S.H.I.E.L.D. gets a hold of Carnage's energy signature and blasts it, leaving...

Finally at the end of the arc in #104, "Gwen Stacy" is seen in S.H.I.E.L.D. custody. (The "Peter" next to her is one of the clones)

Next: Venom finally returns

You'll notice Gwen!Carnage and Carnage!Gwen seem to resemble their 616 counterparts a lot more.

Also, it's very subtle, but in the expository talk leading up to Fury's arrival at the house 'Richard Parker' keeps looking at Gwen, checking she's alright, trying to get her food.

I have to admit that this was one of my favorite moments concerning Ultimate Spider-man. Nick Fury rolling in trying to keep everything hush hush only for the Fantastic Four to show up since their friends with Peter (by way of Johnny) and demanding to know what bullshit Nick Fury's up to.

And then the whole operation made the news and Kitty Pryde made the X-Men go out to help Peter too (though they were too late to do anything). Still, it's pretty cool that the other superteams have Peter's back.

Considering the extent to which Bendis is really not an action guy - and Bendis is so very, very much not an action guy - this is a really tightly executed bit of legitimately tense, engaging, viscerally compelling storytelling.

And of course, the always welcome pleasure of Ultimate Dick Fury making demands and someone else being like "no, fuck you."

It gets better a couple pages later, when he actually comes out and admits "I was wrong about you."

This is still my fav Ultimate Spidey story. Just the twists that kept on coming and finally.. a happy ending for Pete.

I was really happy to see the FF stand up for Peter because honestly....this is one of those dick moments of Nick Fury where I want someone to just smack him.

Honestly this is a really interesting storyline, but I think I missed where Peter's "dad" appeared.

At the end of the story (I don't have all the parts, but I have the last issue), it turns out "Richard" Parker is just another clone of Peter, this one aged to adulthood due to clonerot.

A mistake I'm amazed they still make, especially as the SUPERMAN film in 1978 got it right: when you have a heart attack, the pain first presents in your ARM, not your chest.
