Detective #567 was written by noted science fiction writer and personality, Harlan Ellison and the end result is.... well, it's fantastic.
It's 12:03 in Gotham City and Batman is starting his nightly patrol, but tonight...
...will be a night like no other for Batman
He spies a man with a gun heading into a late night store...

There are various pithy sayings in the text boxes throughout the story.
Next up is a mugging, where some thug decides to attack an elderly woman who is on crutches. By the time Batman gets there across a busy road, he discovers that A) little old ladies in Gotham get to be little OLD ladies by being tougher than a handful of nails, and B) Used properly, a crutch can be a very effective weapon. She tells batman to get the cops whilst she keeps an eye on the loser.

The patrol continues...

Can Batman make it in time to save this poor fellow (and it breaks my heart to cut the lovely kinetic scene of Batman swooping down...)
The jumper jumps, but there's a crash from the window behind him, and the Gotham Tactical Response Team officer shows that, despite some stories, Jim Gordon isn't the ONLY effective officer in Gotham.

He sounds almost relieved, doesn't he?

Frustrated again, eh?
A carjacking looks promising, as the Dark Knight espies a man with a crowbar trying to force a door, but....

It's enough to make you pack your cowl away sometimes...
There are other instances throughout the night, a drugs bust where Batman discovers he's just blown MONTHS of work by an undercover officer, someone apparently disabling the burglar alarm is actually an emergency electrician REPAIRING the alarm and so on...
And then comes one of my all time favourite Batman moments....

"My God, it's a GOLEM with a candy bar!" - Worth the price of the whole comic for that line alone.
Now imagine this next said by someone like Kevin Conroy or Deidrich Bader as Batman sees the guy throw away the wrapper of his chocolate and, trying to unsettle him with the only thing he can think of....
"There's an ordinance against littering, Tiny!"

Perfection!
Finally calling it a night, a night which by rights has to exist somewhere on the crime stats bell-curve, even in Gotham, Bruce returns to the Manor earlier than usual, and Alfred enquires if the night had gone badly...

Yes, that moment could be overanalysed, but just go with the flow! ;)
The "Bye... for now" is because it was writer/editor's Len Wein last issue before a certain Denny O'Neill took over. I believe that, more relevantly for this post, Gene's last issue of Detective Comics, so what a note to end on.
I feel I've served Mr Colan badly by only highlighting a couple of his DC Superhero works when he has so much more to offer, but for those wanting to see more, I would suggest a browse through his ComicArtFan page, some magnificent samples there.
And though not on his own page this is a rather unique commission I found on CAF, pencils by Colan, inks by... of all people, George Perez! Not a combination I'd have thought of, but it's gorgeous!

Date: 2011-07-02 12:00 pm (UTC)This kind of story reminds me of the great Ty Templeton writing from the DCAU Batman titles. The issue where he has to take care of a baby all night comes to mind in particular.

"Into action" is his cry!
