Back in the days when a Decepticon having any kind of redeeming feature was the exception.

It's an odd thing that he mentions "the real Scorponok". So Scorponok's personality is subsumed or just gone in favour of Zarak's. It's an angle of the Headmaster process that didn't get explored much.
(Though Nightbeat's bio mentioned he and Muzzle got along pretty well, and there's also what happens with Op and Hi-Q.)

It does get brought up in Regeneration One (puttup), with the 'original' Scorponok returning, but that series also has him develop a 'gene-key' that can just turn people evil, so it's best ignored in the main.

Furman deciding that what the franchise needed was for the Autobot/Decepticon conflict to be a race war when he came back to write for the Regeneration One series is an example of how sometimes writers should bow out on a high note

An incredibly powerful moment and a great ending to Lord Zarak’s arc under Furman. The Unicron fight really just blew the doors off everything.
