We continue the exploration of Death's Head's origins with some family connections, but mostly a man with a gun for an arm being really, really cross.

In 1990, after the ending of his solo series, Death's Head got one final outing at Marvel UK in the hands of his original creators Simon Furman and Geoff Senior in the shape of the graphic novel The Body in Question.

Originally serialised in Marvel UK's short run anthology title Strip, the graphic novel gave the chance for Senior to showcase the full range of his skills, with hand-painted artwork, along with a cover by some DH fanboy called Walt Simonson...

We jump back into the Death's Head solo title, after a lengthy detour into the world of Machine Man. Why? Because that gave me a chance to introduce the guest star of Death's Head's final issue - The Iron Man of 2020.

By Simon Furman and Bryan Hitch (channelling Alan Davis pretty damn hard).

More of the comedic Death's Head over his next couple of appearances, a far cry from fighting dark gods back in the pages of Transformers a year or so previously. It's clear the dark humour is starting to become a firm part of the character's appeal, so it's played up on here.

Firstly, Death's Head #7 by Simon Furman. Art by Bryan Hitch and Jeff Anderson.

I guess Death's Head #6 could be read either as a parody of such gung-ho military titles as GI Joe or Commando, or as a tribute to them. Probably a little of both, featuring a crack military team of characters with designs so ugly they could easily have been included in the later GI Joe toy line.

Early Liam Sharp on art duty for this issue.

We continue the Death's Head solo title with a comedy of errors meets film noir parody.

Honestly, it's one of the weaker issues, amping humour as it does, and it's a bit too 70s comedy for my tastes, but does have the advantage of John Higgins on art duties.

Death's Head continues his misadventures and attempts (and succeeds, in a couple of memorable cases) to kill various Cybertonians. Transformers have proved tricky costumers so far, but are apparently willing to offer big bucks, even if last time didn't go according to plan.

And, let's face it, neither does this.

From Transformers UK #133-134 and #146

Art by Dan Reed and Geoff Senior. Script by Simon Furman.

The first appearances of Death's Head.

Not his origins, no, that will come later (and may get a little murky, yes), but the first time readers were introduced to the mechanoid bounty hunter with a superiority complex and a zeal for capitalism.

And he appears alongside another race of mechanoids with special abilities, right?

The credits are all over the place for this issue. I don’t know how much Claremont had written when Ms. Marvel was cancelled. Any way, Simon Furman was brought in to finish the script. Michael Gustovich finished the art.

Rights issues prevents the trade I have from collecting Death’s Head's actual first appearance, yes? Instead we get a guest appearance in somebody else's book, huh?

What happens after Megatron gets away from Cobra and GI Joe. The final fate of Hot Spot! Simon Furman writing some Joe characters! A tank/fire truck chase scene!

Apologies for the poor scan quality, but these Titan reprints have terrible binding, and I'll be damned if I'm buying another copy of this material.

This death always leaves me way more choked up than it has any good reason to. Peak Furman, with but the merest sprinkling of his Furman-isms, and one annoyingly familiar line in particular...

I mean, it says part 6 on the title page, and while there's nothing important missing between now and the previous issue, I get the feeling that 'is Hidalgo dead or not???' was meant to be pondered for more than two pages...

Fill-in artist Shannon Gallant (with inker Rob Campanella) does a better job of giving D.H. some personality; more dynamic poses, better utilisation of those head tendrils and making the face look a bit more like, well, a death's head. And eye-acting!

No matter what else, I think that everyone can agree that Death's Head 3.0 has a super-boring character model, managing to both be nothing like either of its predecessors and also having nothing unique of its own to show off, remaining a big grey robot with glowing eyes.
