Well the story ended with the character becoming totally disillusioned. The story pretty much followed the book "All's quite on the western front". There was talk of an ongoing title ,but I dunno. Anyone ?
Didn't even know it was collected - must find. Though I think I got all that was produced, when I bought the floppies. And Carlos Pacheco doesn't get enough love. His Superman is the rightful heir to JL GL.
I could swear it was collected. Maybe I got the first few issues. Hum. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arrowsmith_%28comics%29 No, it was collected and only six issues. As vol 1.
Strangely, I think that Blackadder series is actually the best portrayal WWI's ever had on television. Which is really goofy considering it's a sitcom...
There's lot of good material on WWI out there, but you kind of have to dig a bit deeper to get at it. If there's a war film made between 1920 and 1940, you can bet it's about WWI, for example-- Netflix has dozens of these and IMDB can help you locate them. You can start with, say, Hell's Angels, you've seen All Quiet... if you want to get very disturbed, take a look at Johnny Get Your Gun the 1971 version.
BTW, Flyboys the 2006 movie is ... acceptable, but not very historically accurate.
What I'd really love to see is a WWI movie documenting service for a tank crewman. Can you imagine serving in a Mark IV? Steel walls, moving over rough ground with no suspension to speak of, 120 degree temperatures, the noise and fumes of the diesel right next to you, the constant risk of fire, gas attacks, armor being pierced by a bullet, or having artillery leveled at you. Or simply breaking down and having to hoof it back to cover... It would be like a somehow-even-more-cramped version of Das Boot.
Or worse, you can read the original novel of Johnny Get Your Gun. Pretty powerful stuff, although I gather the '71 movie did it justice (and actually improved on some elements).
On the subject of WW1, the character of Night Raven from Marvel is one of the few older characters I know of whose roots are specifically in the FIRST war, not the second. Not only that, he's a Pacific Northwest Native Canadian, which must be one of the most underrepresented minorities in comics. I can't reccomend his adventures, since I haven't actually read them myself, but I've read OF them, and they sound awesome. He's like a combination of the Shadow and Wolverine.
As in romantic relationships? I love the book to death, but I think Rilla and Kenneth's relationship falls a little flat. But every other relationship in that book, and all of the characters, are completely awesome.
Montgomery was exceptional at creating realistic but fascinating characters.
nah, not the romantic relationship, though I liked it. just the usual trials of a teen, like how she had to swallow her pride and apologize to that chick who mouthed off about Walter, Rilla being upset when she has to break things off w/another guy, things like that. that and the housekeeper chasing that guy off when he insulted her while proposing XD
she was chasing that guy with a pan, if I recall correctly, and I /know/ Alfred knows his way around a gun. ooh, that'd be perfect! he'd shoot people from afar and she'd finish 'em off in close-range pan combat! XD
I liked the Temeraire series, but I always felt that the worldbuilding wasn't detailed enough. Know what I mean? All these things were mentioned but not really elaborated on, not as much as I'd have liked.
Really digging the alternate U.S. map. With the way it's drawn, it's obvious that the Revolutionary War happened quite differently (if at all) and that some very interesting things happened with the area that would have been the Louisiana Purchase.
It is a minor detail that might be explained in the story but how exactly did Newfoundland get the power to take most of Canada above the arctic circle but losing half of their real world landmass to Acadia-Canada?
Further more why haven't the Acadians been evicted down south to the Louisiana area? [/Canadian History Geek]
History happens much, much differently. Sadly much of the Map is never explained. As people have said above there was supposed to be more of the series. I believe KB had some health issues (?) and he never got back to the book.
Ah, the sweet, sweet smell of alternate histories. Smells like electricity and fresh-baked bread (why? Who the hell knows? Just seemed appropriate). Any chance of posting a bit more?
