Ah hell, I'm not going to let a little thing like that make me let class out early! The time-space continuum doesn't dismiss you, I dismiss you!"

Superboy is challenged to outdo the Legioneers at various tasks so he can become a member, but it's not as easy as it looks.



"You lost to a girl, Superboy! And not at something like knitting or being frail, where a woman would have an advantage!"

Things continue in this vein.



Well, it might be functionally useless, but its historical value is--oh, you already dropped it, it's gone.





And so, the young Superman learned a valuable lesson about pointlessly risking others' lives and psychologically torturing people for no reason--it's great fun and he should do it all the time.

So matter-of-factly running on its own logic, you'd have to be John Byrne to feel anything against it as an adult.

The Legion of Super-Heroes, having extensively studied Superman, knew that screwing with his head was the way to go.

Then the twist is that Superboy tells them he won't join the Legion because he's disappointed that they're such dicks.

Cosmic boy doesn't look too happy with his ice cream. I love how the actual test was to see if superboy would help the people, instead of winning the race.
