Look, it's not justifying Vance's actions but his dad had been abusive for years and clearly stupid attacking someone he knew so powerful and Vance just lashing out. Still, a gripping turn that shifted the character forever.

I know how this storyline goes down -- and again, it's a fantastic example of this series's commitment to having its characters make huge, plausible mistakes, and then live with the life-changing consequences -- but this absolutely seems like an open and shut case of self-defense. Vance is already severely physically injured, to the point where he couldn't reasonably defend himself with his arms or legs. His dad immediately starts hitting him hard enough to draw blood. His dad has him down on the floor in a vulnerable position, with his mother incapacitated and unable to intervene, and is announcing his intention to keep hurting Vance when Vance lashes out. Also, his dad KNOWS Vance has these powers and STILL chooses to attack him.
Not really concurring with the subsequent courtroom logic, is what I'm saying.
Yeah. You'd think self-defense would be an acceptable argument under the circumstances -- a grown man brutally beating an already injured young man with the stated intention of harming him, while spouting phobic language... domestic abuse no less.
But it was an interesting way to also explore the nature of the law in a superhero world, the involvement of superhuman abilities... there was a lot to delve into in a way rarely touched upon in comics to that degree.
Yeah, it comes up in the court case that Vance had developed sufficient control of his powers that his resorting instantly to a blast of lethal force was, at some level, conscious choice but, given the stressors involved, I thought it was
I think, though I might be misremembering, that there was something about a DA up for re-election and Vance being a mutant and the heavy handed prosecution being more political than anything
I know you've been posting the Warriors run for some time but it's sort of funny how we're getting to this point just as the Menendez Brothers are in the news again.
I had been reading my friend's copies of New Warriors for awhile, but this was the first issue I bought myself when it came out. I'd always been a fan of Vance (although more his 31st Century counterpart, this one is aces in my book too), and this was one of the more gripping comics I'd read. I was hooked! I stuck with the book for a good while, until budgetary issues demanded cuts. This was the hardest title to let go.
