Machine Man #2 (1984)
Dec. 11th, 2024 04:16 pmWe jump back to the future world of the year 2020, where flying cars, robotic workers and virtual reality addicts are the norm and where the US is in the grip of a megalomaniacal corrupt businessperson.
No comment on the part that was actually accurate.

Last we saw, the reactivated Machine Man was on the run from the robotic flunkies of his past enemy Sunset Bain AKA Madam Menace, CEO of the megacorporation Baintronics.
The robots, however, are poor copies of Aaron.

Machine Man makes his escape, along with his new allies, the Midnight Wreckers, members of a scavenger group that's been a black market thorn in Baintronics' side.
In the meantime it has been revealed that one of Sunset's allies is former Avenger Jocasta, who may or may not be under her control.
The reappearance of Machine Man also alarms another familiar face from his past...

Brickman's back. Oh god.
But just who is that Errol Flynn-alike with the dapper moustache? Arno? Hmmm... We shall see.
Elsewhere the Midnight Wreckers have made their way to an underworld contact of theirs, who they charmingly and repeatedly refer to as 'Fat Man'. However, it seems you can't trust a criminal. Who knew?

The Wreckers fight off their attackers and go to follow their contact through his bolt hole.

Machine Man sends the criminal boss skidding away along a quickly frozen sewer so they can steal his ride.

Thanks to Brain's scrambler device, the Midnight Wreckers get away with Aaron, who is basically experiencing the robotic equivalent of a bad trip for the rest of the issue.
Later, the captured Hassle is tortured by Sunset Bain's resident mowhawked sadist while ex-Senator-now-Ambassador Brickman looks on.

Swiftly skipping over those pages we jump to Hassle managing to overpower her robotic guards, grab a skiff and escape. A little too easily, as she remarks.

Meanwhile the rest of the Midnight Wreckers, with the mentally confuddled Machine Man, head for the home of the Ancient Wrecker himself, a figure of legend who established the scavenger packs. And don't exactly get a warm welcome.

Elsewhere, the mysterious Arno warms up for his pinup shot.

Gasp!
The Iron Man of 2020 is... a villain? Well, maybe. Things are a bit more complicated than that, as we shall see in time.

I'm also with you on the Iron Man design. The cog shoulder pads are goofy, but the helmet is a bit of a classic. Recognisably Iron Man, but the faceplate where you can see Arno's actual mouth beneath, with the almost fanged mouth slot is just sinister enough to be effective.
