scans_dailyIssue #1 was prophecy after Darkseid's passing - the coming of " .. the last avatar.. on [the great steed's] hooves shall follow the reckoning of all " - and charges - Highfather of New Genesis tasking Orion to kill that recently born avatar, and Orion tasking Scott Free to hide that child from him.
Issue #2 opened on the " new hand of darkness " Metron'd related to Highfather - introduced them, emboldened by Darkseid no longer being, as their own thing.
In their own context, they and a leader of theirs were rendered with different art - shown as shadowy menace in #1, they were exposed matter-of-factly in #2.
' " Nothing more than a scavenger, " he thinks to himself.
' " Just a carrion feeder. " '
His rumination continued.
On New Genesis, Highfather turned in the tormenting thoughts of what he sought to prevent.
On Earth, Scott Free set out to prevent - leaving an apology note to his wife for heading alone into danger.
Scott stepped out into the night - and was caught by Barda, mad that Orion'd " showed up out of nowhere..
" .. this child [Orion's been asked to kill].. he might be a god, like us.
They set off.
(Taking Olivia along seems odd, but with Scott now tangled in " the games of gods ", she's probably as safe with them as she'd be anywhere else.)
The child of prophecy had himself been set off with by his parents.
" He is our son. "
Their pursuers were close on their heels - one was telling his boss just how close.
" .. he vaporized your entire team as a reflex. "
Mr. Lord responded by bringing up his father who'd killed himself, establishing that he was Maxwell.
(Serifan of the youthful Forever People, weathered by his time on Earth.)
(Max ended up comatose during post-Rebirth Wonder Woman.)
" .. I had my security team review footage of the moments before I awoke.
Serifan recognized whose hand: " Metron. "
(On the one hand, " human villain in a New Gods story who's a pawn for one of those gods, marked with a symbol associated with Darkseid " really seems like it should be Morgan Edge with the resources of Intergang.
On the other hand, Max Lord as a character has been associated with Jack Kirby creations for nearly his entire history - his first turn as a villain also involved the work of Metron.
On a third hand, Morgan Edge and Max Lord are fairly similar characters.)
Metron told Desaad what he'd told Highfather of the New God child awakened on Earth.
" What does that mean to you, Desaad? "
(" .. insects.. scurrying and biting and crawling.. " also describes the power dynamics of Apokolips below Darkseid.)
