Don’t worry, I plan on reading the rest of Kirby's Fourth World books as well. Yes, even The Forever People!

Scott fends off the advances of some criminal types and decides to stick around.

What an odd thing to say.

Scott dons the Mr. Miracle costume and chases the criminals back to their lair.

Well, that was a short series. What do you mean the issue isn’t finished yet?

Oh, no. My one weakness, plastic sheets!

It has been a number of years since I read it, but I don't remember The Forever People being that bad, there's actuallya number of things I quite like about it. For my money Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen is the true nadir of The Fourth World.

I like the Forever People. They were kind of a fun, goofy, pseudo-hippie group as I recall. "We have fun names! Like mine is Beautiful Dreamer." That title was also the origin of the Mother Box, one of Kirby's niftier "future tech" ideas, and an early example of an A.I. that was neither a robot nor a huge ENIAC-type computer nor even a mainframe.

Mister Miracle was definitely the best of the Fourth World titles. Scott and Barda were easily the two most likable New Gods, and the series itself did the best job of putting forth Kirby’s thesis of these guys as embodiments of fundamental concepts.

All the Fourth World stuff was top sellers when it came out. But the records didn't reflect that because a lot of stores sold it under the table before the release day, so DC management didn't treat Kirby like they should have. It was only when people that read his stuff growing up took over is when he started getting real respect.

Steel Hand, with the mighty power of... having a steel hand.
All he fears is Sergeant Steel's lawyers.
And, well, anyone who can just avoid it and hit his non-steel body parts, presumably.

... not every Kirby character is a born winner.

JSA: The New Golden Age had as one of its many ideas that before Scott came along Thaddeus Brown did superheroics with the JSA.
And, like so many, many ideas it raised, never really explored it further.
