It’s been a while since I tried reading this (think I only got as far as #5) but if nothing else I think this is a pretty nice illustration of how hardwired Kirby’s brain was into the whole Comics Should Be About Super-Gods bent. Who else would look at “hey, we need a horror book” and go “Okay, so back in the days of Camelot…”

Obviously the character retained huge appeal with all kinds of talented creators after Kirby (Alan Moore, Bruce Timm… in fact Hellboy’s an ongoing love letter to it all, isn’t he?), but I can’t help wondering how much of *that* comes from this basically being the closest we’ll ever see to Kirby doing a Batman run.

It is likely relevant that Etrigan's design came from a storyline in the Prince Valiant comic, which also takes place in Arthurian times:
