In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.

Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.

The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.

Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.

It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.

The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than scans_daily. But please, no doomscrolling, for your own sake.

As I'm supposed to be in a training course at the moment, with a soothing yet informative voice on Teams lulling me as much as it is educating me, so I shall try to be short and snappy here.

Which is perhaps more than can be said for this weeks season finale of Doctor Who which was... cramming a LOT of things into even an extended runtime. A lot of rot13 here, so sorry about that

It is Pride Month, which we shall make a separate post about shortly as this year, perhaps more than most recent years, needs to be emphasised.

Though (and I admit itt rainbow capitalism) I will mention that this years Disney's Pride Month Droid is C1-RN8W, a black variation of Chopper from Rebels, with rainbow accents which, given Chopper's general disposition, seems to make "Be gay, do crimes! the subtext here.

I am nearing the end of my Blue Beetle and Mister Miracle read throughs. I know other creators had a go at wroting rhe Fourth World titles after they were un-cqncelled, but I don’t feel especially inclined to check them out. I did think about trying the J.M. DeMatteis series because I am intrigued to see Scott and Barda try to live simple domestic life.

People seem to be enjoying my Rom posts, so I thought I would start posting Bill Mantlo’s Hulk run. I always thought it was an overlooked run, so am only too happy to post it.

For those of you that are interested, here is the full list of titles I am posting.

These titles are totally new to me.

Black Panther
Blue Beetle
The Forever People
Fury of Firestorm
Guy Gardner: Warrior
Hawkworld
Justice League of America
The Question
Richard Dragon: Kung Fu Fighter
Rom: Starknight
Starman
Thor
Wonder Woman

These titles are books I have already read.

Amazing Spider-Man
Batman: Knightfall
The Demon
Excalibur
Green Lantern
Mister Miracle
New Gods
New Mutants
Robin
Superman: Exile
Uncanny X-Men
X-Factor
X-Force

Me a few days ago: Would it be in poor taste to mock the misfortune of Very Bad Person?

(Probably, but they're a monster)

Me today: Does anyone remember the thing from last week?

The news cycle moves too fast.

Anyway, happy Pride Month.

It's never too late to hold a grudge.

When "Color Out Of Space" launched, no matter its' success, I chuckled knowing that H. P. Lovecraft would have hated the American spelling of the title of his favourite of his own stories.

So, the presidential election in Poland was narrowly won by Karol N (PiS), the worst person yet to hold that position, and that includes two different dictators, one of whom used the army against his own people. Karol N is a big supporter of organized crime, being personal friends with several gansters, having taken part in illegal 'human game hunts' (where young men gather up and find victims in the city to beat up), having written a biography of one of the most infamously violent criminals in recent history of Poland, and having provided sex workers for his colleagues. Note that he rooted his campaign on moral grandstanding, as far right likes to do. It is worth nothing that his opponent, Rafał Trzaskowski of the ruling coalition, won in the majority of Poland's territory, but in these the difference between the two candidates tended to be only a few percent, while in the provinces won by Karol N he got as much as twice the amount of Trzaskowski's vote. You can read more on the phenomenon here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poland_A_and_B I am worried not as much by the president (who by himself cannot do much in Poland), but by the fact that popular support has shifted back towards far right in the country, which creates a very bad prognosis for the upcoming 2027 parliamentary elections.

In May I've read several American comics:
From Marvel: Doom's Division, Uncanny X-Men, Ultimate X-Men and New Champions
From DC: the whole Absolute line, Poison Ivy and Batgirl
Three things I enjoy the most in superhero stories are playing with, deconstructing and reconstructing established characters, themes and formats (Absolute line, Poison Ivy), Asian settings and characters (Batgirl, Doom's Division, Ultimate X-Men and Uncanny X-Men), as well as queer characters and relationships (Uncanny X-Men, Poison Ivy, possibly and hopefully also New Champions). I am greatly enjoying those series and completely ignoring everything else. This is the only way to be happy with comics. My current favourite title is Absolute Martian Manhunter, the most experimental of them.

Heaven Official's Blessing was released in Poland! I purchased a limited hardcover edition of the first volume of the novel, first time I did so since The Iron Widow (of which I have a very complicated opinion - I loved the book when I was reading it, but the author's later political activism put the motifs from the novel in a different perspective, one that I cannot really agree with). The Polish edition is beautiful, with elaborate decorations and beautiful illustrations making it a very elegant book to look at. As for the novel itself, I would love to recommend it - the worldbuilding is amazing, the characters really have DEPTH, the humour is clever, the reliance on plot twists putting previous events in a new perspective gives the series great reread value, and the language is simply beautiful. However, for every momement I am in awe over the writing, there's a moment I feel like being punched in the face by the novel's casual racism against Central Asians. It hits way too close to home for personal reasons.

Magia Exedra started covering Scene Zero story arc! I greatly recommend starting playing it now if you were considering playing the game, as Scene Zero has not been previously published in English, and as much as I disliked a lot of characterisation of the preexisting characters, it is objectively a very good story, written by the author of Stein's Gate and You and Me and Her - influences especially from the later tale can be seen on the storyline. You will also get to experience the anime, good chunk of Magia Record, the drama cd and Oriko Magica manga series LEGALLY for FREE in ENGLISH, it's totally worth it! Speaking of games, I will most likely soon be having more free time at work. I plan on catching up with Love Nikki, Shining Nikki, NuCarnival and Cat Fantasy. It's been months since I've played those games and I'm missing my waifus and husbandos. Do you guys know if the English version of Infinity Nikki has been released yet? I've only seen people playing on South East Asian server so far. I was wondering if it is worth downloading Fate Grand Order. On one hand, Altria and Jeanne my beloveds. On the other, the game seems to be positively drowning in horny nonsense, and I've had way over my fill of it in NuCarnival and Cat Fantasy. Or maybe I should go back to Honkai Impact 3rd? My new cell phone can handle the game. So many choices.

What are you guys going to watch next anime season? Current seasons of The Apothecary Diaries, Black Butler and Gundam will be ending and I thus far only WataNare has caught my eye. I'm very open to recommendations! Speaking of recommendation, do you know any female Korean singer (not necessarily k-pop, but somebody working mostly in Korean music market) with a distinctly low voice? I wnated to show a song or two in Korean to a friend who is a clasically trained musician and considers typical female voices in Korean and Japanese music to be too childlike.

It's not an especially happy Pride for me this year.

Don't want to say "I told you so" re: RTD because I told precisely no-one, not wanting to be a smart-arse. But yes. I was suspicious of Chibnall because I remembered "Cyberwoman", and I was suspicious of RTD because I remembered that BS old-man-yells-at-cloud speech about self-service checkouts from "Years and Years", and the entire script of "Love & Monsters" and...everything about Martha. I wish I could be surprised.

I am devastated to learn of the death of Jonathan Joss, known for his work as John Redcorn on and off of "King of the Hill" as well as Ken Hotate in "Parks and Recreation". He was murdered in the street, a hate crime no doubt motivated by his race and sexual orientation.

To quote a more comprehensive summation of the circumstances: you cannot talk about the homophobic murder of jonathan joss without including in the conversation that he is indigenous.

american indian men are at the 2nd highest risk of death by murder compared to all other ethnic groups. in their lifetimes, 82% of native men report having experienced domestic violence. yet the overwhelming majority of perpetrators are non-natives (88% of native men and 92% of native women who reported violence said their attacker was non-native). what’s more, tribal governments are often stymied in their attempts to bring justice against non-natives, meaning that many of these cases go unresolved.

this was an intersectional attack. the fact that he is indigenous matters, even if the motivation was homophobic, because it made him even more vulnerable and disposable in the eyes of his killer.

I'm usually fairly resilient, but y'all...this makes me feel utterly powerless. That this could just happen, that the perpetrator would be emboldened to do something so horrible, that the police have the killer but won't treat it as a hate crime...I just have no idea what to do.

---

One of those rare occasions that I make an anti-recommendation: do not, under any circumstances, buy I Ate The Whole World To Find You by Australian artist Rachel Ang. As a comic, it's fairly unremarkable I'll explain why in Rot13 as it's personal and involves discussion of kink and attraction.

In short: while my day-to-day is fine and lovely, there are pockets of frustration and depression that make me want to lie in bed gaming all day and never see the outside of my home again.

But also: the weekend before last, I took a walk in the park with my dearest, and while admiring the new goslings, found one that had wandered into a grate outside of the lake and gotten stuck, and picked it up. Though the parents were obviously alarmed, it sat peacably in my hand, and was fuzzy and warm. These things are worth going on for.

Think I might still be in a state of shock over what happened on Saturday.
So that most coherent thoughts I can make are about...
"That's it? That's it?!"

Think I'd probably be less shocked if there'd been some forewarning, rather than just having it sprung up like that.
Because damn it, I was otherwise enjoying that.
(There's an article repeating on the news feed saying Who fans should "just enjoy the ride." I was. That's why I'm so upset!)

So it's quite hard to form any opinion on [PLANE GOES PAST] at the moment, while I'm still getting over that.
(Though some of the speculation that's already there is... ...... well, out of one frying pan and in to a slightly different one.)

also I'd already had Gold's score from "World Enough & Time" going through my head, so it's jammed in there.

Pokémon Legends A-Zed has a release date. In October. Yaaay!

Managed to get the new Thunderbolts Epic Collection. No printing errors in this one.
Proper Thunderbolts, not just Yet Another Suicide Squad riff.

The Transformers One Sourcebook for the roleplaying game got an internet release.
Turns out the back-half focusing on the Thirteen is a small butcher's shop full of deep cuts.
Delicious, delicious nerdery...

Managed to find the second volume of Morrison's JLA a while back. Back in the days when they were coherent and not complain' about the state of comics t'day.
(Shame they don't do much with the "Hippolyta replaces Diana" thing. Ah, well.)

Current mad idea is (not at all inspired by current goings-on) do-overs of big X-Men stories from every major run.
Well, excepting Claremont because he was there for so long.
Right now the likeliest candidate for the 80s seems to be The Brood Saga.
Which is difficult when can't find a copy of it nowhere.
(Since right now I'm avoiding any and all time travel, most likely for the mid-00s seems to be Rise and Fall of the Shi'ar Empire.
But no Vulcan!)

20th Anniversary Doctor Who Rewatch- The Doctor Dance:You know at first I was worried all the meat of the story was in the last episode, and the plot would just be them running around the abandoned hospital. Thankfully I was wrong and more interesting stuff started to happen.
This was a strong episode but there were some odd moments.

So their trapped in a room, the infected people are about to break in, Captain Jack pulls out his gun and finds.....a banana. Yes the Doctor has swiped Jack's gun. He then proceeds to blast a hole in the wall which is what Jack planned to do, which makes the thing feel kind of pointless.
(Jack and the Doctor not getting along is a pretty important part of the plot, and his equipment is more flashy than practical but it doesn't seem to really add or contribute anything to the proceedings)

Also the episode uses 'wait a minute that sounds not the recorder/typewriter IT'S THE MONSTER WHICH IS HERE WITH US' trick twice.

Poor editing or a harbinger of the fatal flaws that would come to define Moffat's work? I'll let you be the judge

I had a job trial. It didn't work out but they did pay me $51.

oh good my copy of Tales of The Underworld arrived. now I can learn what Ventress got up to after she died and the exciting origin of Cad Banes Iconic Hat.
Okay it took three minutes for them to undermine the ending of Dark Disciples. well it's efficient if nothing else.
I guess her story was okay, but I feel like they made Ventress too nice. There should have been more conflict between her and the young Jedi.

So Cad Bane's origin is that his mentor was the old Cad Bane and he actually copied his outfit and all of his mannerisms?
.....well he is just an Alien The Man With No Name

Jack wasn’t going to shoot the wall, he was aiming to shoot the child. If you have a gun, chances are you’ll use it as a gun, and the Doctor can’t have that when everyone’s just a victim of the nanogenes.

I always liked Ventress’ ending in Legends, where she decides she’s sick of the galaxy’s nonsense and runs off to parts unknown. Her canon ending never sat right with me. Now she’s apparently alive again? Or is she a clone? I haven’t seen The Bad Batch yet.

Rainy today.

Work is work.

Marvel Puzzlequest is having New Avengers as a theme this month, and the chase character is Toni Ho who is apparently another Iron Man spinoff. Anyone got scans of a story with her?

Birthday coming up; goalpost for Social Security retirement has moved, so three more years. I am so very weary.

I put a thing up on List Challenges: https://www.listchallenges.com/skjam-watches-all-the-movies-2025-update Please enjoy!

Over at my blog I look at an Ace Double, two good authors but their lesser known work. https://www.skjam.com/2025/06/02/book-review-the-crossroads-of-time-mankind-on-the-run/

Toni Ho is the daughter of Ho Yinsen.
An alt-reality version of her first appeared in Secret Wars: Captain Britain and the Mighty Defenders (written by Al Ewing, art by Alan Davis), before a slightly different version appeared in Al Ewing's New Avengers.

Also:
U.S.Avengers (where she gets a very cool bit in the Secret Empire tie-in)
Avengers: No Surrender
Very technically in Infinity Warps: Iron Hammer, where she's merged with Hogun the Grim to be Toni the Grim.
And Coates' Captain America run.

She's dropped off the radar for the now, though.
(Last time she appeared in anything was an online exclusive comic in '23.)

Regardless of the quality of the actual episode, we’re firmly back in the “Doctor Who is Ruined FOREVER!? DEAD SHOW, DESPERATION, PANDERING!!!” phase of discourse and it never gets easier. Heck, people have finally started being revisionist towards the Chibnall era.

I’m really frustrated with all the criticism around the new Lilo & Stitch. I’m not saying you have to like it or anything (goodness knows there’s enough to pick apart with it). Putting aside the flagrant misinterpretations and flat-out lies about what goes down in it (because somehow despite grossing a mectric crapton of money worldwide, clearly nobody on the internet’s even seen the dang thing), but I see so many people insist on speaking on behalf of native Hawaiians about how the film is offensive and colonialist and racist and whatever yet hardly anyone’s actually giving said Hawaiians a platform to speak about the film themselves, and then if they do speak out and what they say isn’t completely negative then they’re shunned or told they’re wrong about their own dang culture. It’s completely maddening.

In other news, spent most of the evening at the vet, because our beloved tortie Suki started coughing up hairballs, then fluids, then started screaming when she tried to vomit. Ran a battery of bloodwork and took X-rays...nothing except a possible UTI. Brought her home and she was fine, eating and drinking as though nothing had happened. Don't care. She means the world to us and I didn't think twice.

So....a short while back my wife mentioned hearing about an interesting graphic novel called "Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees" by Patrick Horvath. She wondered if I could get her a copy, and I said sure. Went out to Comixology and hey, all six issues were there! I grabbed them and took a look.

My my my. And yes, I got her a copy. She and my daughter eat that stuff up.

(because I forgot earlier. Forget me own damn head next)

We can at least agree Ncuti Gatwa managed to make a man striding into a room wearing a kilt epic, right?

Oh, and apparently that Vision series they're making has cast a Jocasta.
...
With Marvel's track record of late, so long as they just manage to make her actually a robot, I'm fine.
Literally the bare minimum of resemblance to the character. All they need to do.

I'm a decade late to the party, but since it was free on Game Pass I've been playing through Arkham Knight. And yes, the reliance on the Batmobile is as annoying as everyone said it was. The iconic Batman moments of duelling Jason Todd in his tank!

The Manbat boss fight involves climbing a high building to jump onto him. Three times, because videogames.

There's good stuff in there, but the necessity of having to drive back and forth to get places is so irritating.

It's the only one of the Arkham games I never finished and the only one I've never even been tempted to revisit. And as you said, it's a bummer because there is some fun stuff there, but there's a lot of chaff in that wheat.

And here I was, happy to find out that I could download New Who on the Prime desktop app to watch offline and who cares if I'm 15 years late to the party! But maybe I shouldn't bother at all after all..?

The sequel series to the Librarians debuted. There was some pre-release news that made me skeptical about it before it debuted but the actual show is pretty in tune with the classic TNT series
