My next post for Spider-Marriage Week is a page that actually takes place long before they were married--or even a couple--but is nevertheless the first significant turning point in the Peter/Mary Jane relationship. And it gets me every time.




The final page of ASM #122, the issue immediately after Gwen Stacy's death, and following the death (at that time) of Norman Osborne.

And this is why MJ is great (and caring and unexpected) and any man who makes a deal with the Devil to lose such a woman just so that his 80 year dying aunt (who told him to leave her be) can live is an idiot. Or to be put it more bluntly the people (*cough*JoeQ*cough*) who would make Peter do such a thing are idiots.

Which is why trying to force Mary Jane back into the role of shallow party-girl is so utterly wrong-headed, because she'd already outgrown that role after the death of Gwen Stacy, before 90 percent of the people currently reading or writing comics were even born.

Tom DeFalco and Gerry Conway did a lot to say the shallow party-girl be a persona MJ put on since her life back in Pittsburgh was so miserable.

Did they ever try to explain this scene with the added fact MJ knew Peter was Spider-Man?

Finally, I first got this issue in an early MARVEL TALES reprint that curiously left out this last page. I never understood why they did that.

Yes. Which is way I can (still) never buy the idea that her shacking up/or close to it with that steroid-filled selfish douche-y actor in Hollywood made any sense at all, unless she was filled with self-loathing. But that's something we never saw - in fact until she he insulted her and she dumped him she seemed very into Whatshisname (and this is supposedly the same non-superficial MJ who dated both Harry and Peter when they were part of the "non-cool" crowd).

Okay, I must admit I've never quite been able to forgive MJ for the effect she had on Felicia's character (something I think she has never quite recovered from). But this is an excellent scene.

Why are you blaming a fictional character for the decisions of the writers? It's hardly MJ's fault that the only way the contemporary creative team could handle writing Felicia out after the marriage was to turn her into a stalker-psycho.
