hey i just wanted to say that i just recently read the newest Detective comics, and while the as always the Question stuff was great, i really liked the Batwoman portion. I know alot of people were peeved at the whole "Buxom lipstick lesbian" promotion, and have since then come to appreciate the character.

all that said, i loved this scene from the latest issue. It shows Kate's homosexuality does not define her, rather, it is her strength of character.

Photobucket

this one and the one where she was with the BTO show her strength of character.

but more importantly i enjoyed how this scene with her dad played out, it wasn't the fact that she was gay that was important to him, it was that she acted honorably.

i am enjoying this look back into her past. what do all of you think?

as far as the Green Lantern QUestion, anyone notice the heading (on the bottom of the page?)The New Guardians? whats that about?

PS i could use some help with the Cut.... the scan is not showing...

Feh. This is one of the reasons I have no interest in joining the military. (Apart from, y'know, the whole violence and killing thing.)

Yeah. There were lots of reasons I left the military, but the ability to say 'fuck off' to the chain of command is the right I treasure most about being a civilian.

If you don't mind my asking, why'd you join in the first place? (Unless that's too personal, of course - I just don't have the chance to ask these sorts of questions very often, and I'm curious. Not a lot of ex-military folks where I live.)

I've always believed, like Obama, that citizens ought to put some kind of service in for their country. This was long before he offered the idea of other kinds of civil service for young people than military. My family had varied honorable experiences, my father was a Vietnam medic, my great-uncles fought in the Resistance, my grandfather island-hopped as a Marine, my great grandfather died fighting Turks. I was offered a good deal on college money, leaving home for the first time was attractive, and paratrooping sounded exciting. The clincher was that my father told me I'd hate it. So naturally, I signed up immediately.

And he was right, was he? Or was he?
I personally believe it's more important to serve the world in general than one singular country - after all, every country is part of the world, and in the long run, what's good for all of them is going to benefit the one you happen to live in. Still, I don't mean to denigrate your beliefs or anything - it's certainly a noble thing to serve your country in some fashion, and I know a lot of people who have believe strongly in doing so whenever they can. I guess I'm just a bit jaded on the subject - my Dad was in the Peace Corps during Vietnam, and spent most of his youth hitchhiking around the globe, and my Mom grew up in Africa, so I guess I wasn't raised with a particularly US-centric view of the world.

I look upon being a civilian as a reward for dues paid.

I can understand that idea, but it wasn't prevalent when I was growing up and there IS some nobless oblige in serving the State whose structure has given you your freedom and rights. It isn't that you go, "If only I could travel to other countries and oppress brown people for big corporate oil!" It's defending your country from all the nutcases and being part of emergency services when disaster has taken away normal civilization.

(Minirant:
The National Guard used to typify this. It's a horrific perversion that now people who signed up to be Weekend Warriors are being sent overseas for years because the cowardly politicians don't want to admit the active military has to be expanded to Cold War levels due to overcommittments. Stop-loss and activating the inactive reserves was supposed to take place in times of continental invasion.)

I get that - it's two different flavors of the same thing, really. It's just that the morality of the situation can get so murky at times - you may have joined to defend your country from the genuine enemies and to save lives during emergencies, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the people in charge see you in the same way. Look at all that BS that went on during the Bush administration, and all the soldiers that resigned in disgust because THIS wasn't what they signed on for - that could happen at any time, really. If you're out there in the field, you have to accept that the orders you're following may be given by people whose concern is not so much for the good of the country as it is for personal ideology and financial concerns. I have nothing but respect for people who put their lives on the line for the sake of their country, but speaking personally, I would rather not have to face that sort of moral dilemma.
And yes, I agree with you about the National Guard. A year or so ago, there were raging forest fires in the area where I live, and the National Guard was called out to help fight them. I remember being genuinely surprised that they showed up, because I was convinced that they'd all been shipped over to Iraq already, and that there wouldn't be any left. (As it was, I think, they were awfully short on manpower.)
