I've been wondering when best to post this (as I'm out of reach for most of Christmas week and the start of the next), and this seems an opportune time.
This is the last weekend before Christmas, the fourth Sunday of Advent, and is usually a hectic hustle and bustle in an attempt to pick up that last minute present you'd forgotten about, or seeking out that deal for such and such.
And in the midst of it all, I think we need a moment or two of calm, to think again about what is truly important in life. Is it the presents, is it the parties... or is it as simple as spending time with those you love.
When I approached the Black Cat about getting another Christmas commission from her, she graciously offered me first pick of her Christmas pieces ("Battle for the Cold" and "For Santa" being the others), and I chose this one for us.

The simplicity and heart here is wonderful, no?
In a world with super-powered dogs (even plushie versions of them) and where your Dad owns THE coolest car in the world, and where kanga's roam free (and yes, it's a kanga, it completes the DC Trinity's presence)... sometimes it's nice to just sit in the warm and watch the snow fall in the company of someone you love. (The fact that Timmy, who is usually on the receiving end of Terry's more... boisterous (okay VIOLENT) displays of affection, is cuddling his little brother in a moment of perfect peace makes it just wonderful IMHO)
I should add that the Black Cat also refused payment for this piece, as she wished this to be a thank you to the scans_daily community for our support of her work (She's thanking us? Wow!). So instead I made a donation to the UK's Children in Need telethon, equivalent to what I might pay for a commission, it seemed appropriate.
Some posters have, over the months, said that they would be prepared to pay to read Black Cat's work, and at this time of year, I would suggest to any members of the community of that inclination (and in a situation to do so), to think about throwing a few extra coins in the direction of whichever charity you feel is deserving of support, not quite "In her name", but along those lines. I would not be so churlish as to dictate the charity or the amount, as we all have our favourites and our own budgets, but it's the time of year when such things are appreciated, and considering the joy Black Cat has brought to us through the year, it seems apt.
Whether you do or not, just enjoy the art anyway! :)
So I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in the community (or communities as this year has show); for the fun, the discussions, the arguments (You know who you are, but weren't they fun?! :) ), the shared obsessions (even especially the naughty ones), the hidden gems and the glimpses of glorious comic art past and present, may I wish a very happy Christmas to you and your families (in whatever shape, size and form they come in) and best wishes for 2010!

Date: 2009-12-20 02:54 am (UTC)Hmmm... probably not a problem, provided appropriate credit was given to The Black Cat, but I'd strongly recommend dropping her a line over at her deviantArt account (http://the-blackcat.deviantart.com/ ) or her LiveJournal account ( http://the-dark-cat.livejournal.com/ ) and ask first, it would be the polite thing to do, no?
Tangential, but needs to be said.
