I thought Dick's mom came up with the name. Didn't she call him Robin?

I think it really depends on what origin story you go by. I like to think Robin was a subtle way for Dick to honor and remember his mother, if only because there's so little active remembrance/acknowledgment of mothers, living or dead, among superheroes in the DCU.

But of course, the downside is that it makes Bruce an ever bigger asshole for ever thinking it was acceptable to take that name away and give it to someone else without Dick's consent.

Depends which iteration of the origin you mean, but current version is that no, he didn't, it was Dick's mother's pet name for him because he was born on the first day of spring.

I never knew that about the Robin name, so thanks for the info. I really like what [personal profile] lyraeinne mentioned above, that by using the name is a way for Dick to honor and remember his mother.

By the way can you tell me what issue that origin story is from?

Depends on what continuity you're playing in. Overall, Superman was the first Nightwing in the bottle city of Kandor which was, at the time in his Fortress of Solitude. Then Van-Zee, then Dick Grayson.

And I'm not sure wether it was the Earth-1 or Earth-2 Bruce Wayne that dressed as Robin for a single case before he even thought of becoming Batman.

All retconned away, of course, but still...

What makes this more awesome is that as the Superman family decided to remind us Nightwing wasn't an original name either.

But he says "I should talk, right?" in the very next panel. So...he's at least aware of the irony.

There's just something about Dick's so very graceful acrobatic pose coupled with that unglamorous "BASH" sound effect, that makes me all kinds of happy.

So are Black Mask and the Reaper a dig at Marvel's frequent use of Black Hood and Taskmaster these days, or is it just a coincidence that we've got a skull-and-hood team on the go here?

Wherein Dick Grayson lacks a sense of irony.

Until he shows it in the next panel:) I like so much that he makes the tiniest sliver of a joke to himself in the Batsuit.
