Found a really, really, really great book.

I found a really, really, really fun book. It's by Darwyn Cooke--and it's FANTASTIC. The cover looks like this, if you want to keep an eye out in the backbins:



It's Solo 5, written and illustrated by Darwyn Cooke. It's so gorgeous! And several really terrific stories. REALLY. (Here are the titles: World's Window, King of America (EXCELLENT King Faraday story) Solo Dreamgirl Pinup, Everyday Madness, Funny Pages, The Question and Deja Vu.) It's wonderful! If you like the kinds of stories I like. And the art! EeeeEEE!

I'm taking a break from posting scans for a while. At least a week. I'm saying it 'out loud' so that I'll definitely stick to it and not find something fantastic that makes me want to share it so badly that I forget that I want to take a break. Don't know if that would happen or not, but that's why I'm mentioning it.

The last one has been collected, with other Darwyn Cooke Batman work, including Selina's Big Score, which annoyed me as I already had that in its solo trade.

Selina's Big Score is also awesome by the way. ^^ And the characters are reused in the last of the storylines, though I don't think it's canon.

This was my favorite issue of SOLO, which is saying something. The entire thing is packed with stuff that I've wanted to see scanned here. The history of comics through the decades, that one alone I've been tempted to scan for months.

It kills me that the BATMAN: EGO, AND OTHER TAILS collection only collected some of this issue, leaving out the rest for reasons I can't even begin to fathom. This *must* be in print, dang it!

Really, all of SOLO is worth tracking down. I wish I could read the material that Jill Thompson and George Pratt did for what would have been their issues.

I loved SOLO too. It's all worth getting, but this one is a particular favorite.

I really can't get enough of Darwyn Cooke's artwork. I even bought the "New Frontier" figures so I could hold it in my hands. It's just fabulous.

I love the superhero nightclub Slam is hanging out in. Aquaman dancing with Mera (I think), Dr. Fate and Vigilante hanging out together, and Rorschach brooding by himself drinking coffee. I want to visit that place.

It's a really great book, I tracked it down specifically for the Question story. The Slam Bradley in a bar scenes actually serve as a framing device for all the other stories presented, with just as many cameos on each page set there.

It, like most of Solo, can be really hard to find though. This one and the Allred issue are particularly rare.

I take it that the Question story you mentioned doesn't actually involve the Question? 'Cause I was looking out for Vic or Renee, and I didn't see either of them.

Oh, it's not in this post, but there's a story starring the Question (Vic of course, i think Solo was a couple years before 52) in the issue. Solo was basically an artist showcase where one creator is given 40+ pages to tell short stories. The general guideline was that at least one DC character had to be featured in the issue (Howard Chaykin probably stretched this the furthest, and if you're not familiar with Powwow Smith you'd think he'd circumvented it completely).

Some real quality work came out of it, though apparently it wasn't too big a commercial success. Rumor has it a couple of issues were produced that never saw print (Jill Thompson's being one, to my eternal disappointment).

It has the Question, it's obviously in the plan!
Though I've gotten stuck in the middle of Denny's run, so maybe it'd be a good idea to switch things up a bit. I'll see if I can't post that story some time in the coming week.
