We do get the more popular European comics translated pretty quickly around here, and Spirou's if not fan favorite then at least very much appreciated in certain circles.
Actually, now that I checked they actually translated it already in 2007. I'm really behind in my readings.
French is on my list of "things to learn before I die" too. I almost did already in grade school, but we didn't get enough people for study group and I landed on the German one. Which was a mistake, thanks to the teacher who was as dry as plywood.
Well, unless someone mentioned Second World War, in which case we'd get a very detailed and engaging history lesson. In Finnish, though so someone might say we were wasting the course.
We did it as often as we thought we could get away with it, really.
Sorry, that was for Cain (since a number of Finns know Swedish). For someone born anglo to learn Swedish in order to read a French comic would probably be a bit overkill.
I think I might actually make the effort and learn some basic French. There's a chance I'll be moving to somewhere within the Francophonie in the not-too-distant future, and it would be nice to be able to parlay with the natives. Besides, comics!
I'm within walking distance of Quebec (Gatineau is on the other side of the river), so it actually makes a lot of sense for me to learn it. But yeah, the comics are the real reason.
Tell me about it. A lot of really good Spanish artists work on Franco-Belgian projects, and they've got a lot of seriously good local talent too. Plus they're producing an amazing crop of animators these days at the Gobelins school. Heck with Japan, Europe's where I'm looking to for great comics these days.
Pity I don't speak the language beyond a few words. My high school classes were terrible.
Oh, that's Navis, from the series of the same name. I made a post about her here. It's the same writer-artist team as the Spirou page above, Morvan & Munuera, and it's a prequel to Morvan's other series, Sillage (or in english, Wake).
Also, not only is that macro full of lulz, it aptly demonstrates my point that the last page of Moon Knight was waaay too over the top to be taken seriously. I feel vindicated.
I would have made a different macro, but I couldn't find the shot of Aunt May and the "sticky fluid" under Peter's door.
As to Fanta, the beginning of the story has them at an ancient Japan theme park, where they were both appropriately dressed. Later on, in Tokyo proper, Spirou acquires (well, steals) a bellhop outfit (and looks smashing in it, I might add), but Fanta doesn't bother getting changed.
Actually he ditched them because he was tremenously bad at walking in them, and ended up assaulting a sumo (twice) and was almost thrown into the river. Anyone but Fanta would have given up after the first time.
They were on the run from some Yakuza, and since Spirou was the one with combat skills (he's trained in boxing and karate, I think) he needed to get out of the robes and into something he could fight with.
It's sort of a transparent excuse to get him into the classic bellhop outfit, but it was nice to see since it was the first time he'd worn it in about four volumes.

He does get assaulted by a toilet, though.
